Unair Celebrates “National Dental Health Month” on the “Silent Killer” of Gum Problems

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through its Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) and Dental Hospital (RSGM), commemorated National Dental Health Month (BKGN) 2025 in Surabaya with a strong focus on gum health, which experts described as a “silent killer”. Specialists explained that gum disease, often underestimated compared to cavities, can quietly progress and trigger serious systemic health problems, including risks to the heart and other vital organs.

Prof. Dr. Agung Krismariono, drg. M.Kes., Sp.Perio (K), Director of RSGM UNAIR, underscored the growing urgency of gum health issues in Surabaya. He reported that between September 2024 and September 2025, the hospital recorded approximately 2,150 cases of gum-related complaints, with the majority of patients arriving in already severe conditions. This data highlights the pressing need for greater public awareness and preventive measures in maintaining oral health.

Gum disease is now recognized as the second most common dental issue in Indonesia, making it a pressing public health concern. To address this, UNAIR collaborated with Unilever Indonesia (Pepsodent), PDGI, AFDOKGI, and ARSGMPI to provide free dental and gum check-ups from 18–20 November 2025, with 200 patient slots available each day. The program, now in its 16th year, carried the theme “Cek Gigi dan Gusi: Bebas Biaya, Bebas Cemas, Bebas Ribet”, aiming to make oral health services more accessible and less intimidating for the public.

Beyond treatment, the initiative also emphasized education, encouraging communities to adopt preventive habits and recognize early signs of gum problems before they escalate. By branding gum disease as a silent killer, UNAIR and its partners sought to reframe oral health as a gateway to overall well-being, reinforcing the broader vision of “Senyum Indonesia Hebat”, a campaign to build a healthier, more resilient society through awareness, prevention, and collaboration.

Under the theme “Cek Gigi dan Gusi: Bebas Biaya, Bebas Cemas, Bebas Ribet”, BKGN 2025 offers services delivered by qualified dentists, with easy registration available online via tanyapepsodent.com. In Surabaya alone, the UNAIR Dental Hospital set targets to serve 750 patients while educating 2,000 students and santri on the importance of oral health. To expand oral-health awareness, Pepsodent has also collaborated with the legendary band GIGI to release a remake of the song “Aku Gigi, Mulut Rumahku”, carrying the new message “Strong Teeth Start with Healthy Gums”.

To support continued care, Pepsodent has introduced the Pepsodent Gum Expert variant, formulated with Active Zinc and Vitamin E, clinically proven to reduce plaque, prevent bleeding gums, and nourish gum tissue. Since its launch in 2010, BKGN has provided free education and dental care to more than 2.7 million Indonesians and continues to champion the movement for a healthier, brighter Indonesia through strong teeth and healthy gums.

UNAIR Meraih Penghargaan Peringkat ke-9 Dunia THE Impact 2025

Koordinator Tim Ahli SDGs, A. Safril Mubah, mewakili UNAIR menerima penghargaan THE Impact Ranking ke-9 dunia.

Universitas Airlangga meraih prestasi gemilang dengan menduduki peringkat ke-9 dunia THE Impact 2025. Pencapaian itu juga menempatkan UNAIR pada posisi pertama di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara serta ke-2 di Asia dalam dampak perguruan tinggi terhadap Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prestasi ini mencerminkan kontribusi signifikan UNAIR pada 17 poin SDGs. Di antara 17 poin tersebut, UNAIR juga mendapatkan pengakuan dunia atas pencapaian peringkat pertama SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), peringkat ke-3 SDG 1 (No Poverty), peringkat ke-4 SDG 5 (Gender Equality), dan peringkat ke-29 SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

Dalam pernyataan resminya pada 18 Juni 2025, Times Higher Education (THE) memuji UNAIR sebagai institusi paling berkelanjutan dari negara ekonomi berkembang. Pujian itu wajar didapatkan oleh UNAIR mengingat peringkat UNAIR melonjak signifikan dari ke-81 dunia (2024) ke-9 dunia (2025). Atas prestasi tersebut, THE memberikan penghargaan secara langsung kepada UNAIR dalam Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) di Istanbul, Turki, pada 16-19 Juni 2025. A. Safril Mubah, Koordinator Tim Ahli SDGs UNAIR, mewakili UNAIR menerima penghargaan yang diberikan secara langsung oleh Julie Wilkens McMahon, Vice President THE dan Direktur Kawasan Asia Pasifik.

Dalam pertemuan dengan Safril, Julie memandang UNAIR telah menampilkan performa fantastis dalam THE Impact Rankings. “Congratulations to UNAIR for such a wonderful achievement!,” kata Julie. Safril menyambut baik apresiasi tersebut dan mendorong untuk meningkatkan kolaborasi secara berkelanjutan di masa depan. Dia mengungkapkan bahwa UNAIR berhasil meraih peringkat ke-9 dunia berkat kontribusi semua pihak di UNAIR yang saling berkolaborasi secara sinergis untuk memberikan dampak positif signifikan terhadap pencapaian tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan. “Kami mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua sivitas akademika UNAIR yang telah berperan aktif dalam pengajaran, penelitian, dan pengabdian dalam berbagai bidang yang sejalan dengan SDGs. Penghargaan ini merupakan bukti bahwa UNAIR telah menjalankan program yang berdampak luas bagi peningkatan kualitas hidup masyarakat,” ujar Safril.

THE mengumumkan UNAIR sebagai perguruan tinggi peringkat ke-9 dunia THE Impact Ranking 2025 pada Global Sustainbale Development Congress di Istanbul, 16-19 Juni 2025.

Prestasi UNAIR mencapai peringkat ke-9 THE Impact menempatkan institusi pendidikan Indonesia sebagai aktor penting pencapaian tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan pada tingkat global. Keunggulan UNAIR dalam SDG 6 menggambarkan komitmen Indonesia dalam penyediaan air bersih untuk kebutuhan masyarakat dunia. Universitas Airlangga Enhances Public Health through Various Community Service Initiatives

SDGs—Universitas Airlangga continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving public health through a range of community service programs involving students and healthcare professionals. One of the flagship initiatives is nursing students' involvement in routine health screenings and hypertension education for the elderly. This initiative is part of the university’s efforts to maintain the health of vulnerable groups within the community.

Additionally, the Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSTKA), in collaboration with partners such as PT Amman Mineral, PT Astra Component Indonesia, Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Airlangga, and several other universities, has conducted missions to remote islands. During these missions, RSTKA identified six children with congenital heart disease, who were immediately referred for further treatment. Moreover, this collaboration successfully treated 99 cataract patients in just three days, significantly improving the quality of life for the local population.

Another community service program, led by the Institute of Tropical Diseases at Universitas Airlangga, is the “Mobile Sensing Implementation by Surabaya Hebat Cadre (KSH) to Reduce Dengue Fever Cases in Surabaya.” This program, in collaboration with the Surabaya Health Office, Universiti Malaya, and Jember State Polytechnic, provides education and training to the community to reduce the incidence of dengue fever in the area.

As part of the university’s commitment to increasing student involvement in community service, future student volunteer programs will encompass broader aspects of health. In addition to health screenings and hypertension education, students will participate in programs addressing nutrition, family planning, exercise, and fitness, aiming to provide a more comprehensive approach to health and well-being issues.

Impact of the Programs on Public Health One of the most notable successes is reducing dengue fever cases in Surabaya. Through an intensive training and cadre program, there has been a 15% decrease in cases over the last six months in areas targeted by the initiative. Additionally, the elderly health screening program initiated by nursing students successfully detected and treated 200 cases of hypertension in elderly communities in Surabaya, significantly improving their quality of life.

Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to health extends beyond treatment to prevention and ongoing health education. These initiatives are expected to continue growing, involving more students and partners in providing comprehensive healthcare services to the community.

In a groundbreaking move towards global sustainable development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Center at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has extended an invitation for collaboration with Western Sydney University (WSU). UNAIR Approves Low-Income Students in 2022

In a groundbreaking move, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility by accepting a significant number of underprivileged students for the academic year 2022. Evidence of the realization of UNAIR's commitment is shown by the acceptance of 25,461 underprivileged students who received scholarships and financial assistance.

In a total of 25,461 students, there are a total of 10,766 students who receive financial assistance. A total of 13,161 students received educational assistance. 15 students passed the Student Creativity Program funding. 22 students received Aid for Underprivileged Students. 1225 new students at Indonesia Smart College Card 2022. 25 students received Griya Khadijah scholarship and 272 students received scholarships from Center for Social Fund Management.

In addition to the various scholarship programs mentioned previously, UNAIR also collaborates with a number of parties to improve the welfare of underprivileged students. This partnership includes government initiatives such as Indonesia Smart College Card and Education Fund Management Institute which aim to provide critical financial assistance and scholarships for students underprivileged. UNAIR is actively involved in government scholarship schemes and collaborates with private companies and organizations that generously provide scholarships to underprivileged students. Leading banks in Indonesia, as well as State-Owned Enterprises, actively contribute to educational opportunities at UNAIR through their scholarship programs. This collaboration underlines UNAIR's unwavering commitment to encouraging inclusivity and equal access to higher education, ensuring that underprivileged students can develop academically and realize their dreams.
