FEB and NGOs Collaborate in Mangrove Restoration at Wonorejo
SDGs NEWS - The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of Universitas Airlangga, in collaboration with local NGOs, carried out a mangrove planting programme in Wonorejo, Surabaya, as part of its community service project Ruang Abdi 2024. The initiative aimed to strengthen coastal protection and enhance biodiversity through the planting of mangrove seedlings.
This programme also included public education sessions on coastal ecosystem conservation and the economic benefits of mangrove-based ecotourism. By involving local communities and student volunteers, the activity fostered environmental awareness and responsibility among participants.
FST and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu Conduct Climate Action through Mangrove Planting in Gununganyar
The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), together with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and the SDGs Center of Universitas Airlangga, conducted a joint community service event focusing on climate action and marine conservation. The project took place in Gununganyar Village, Surabaya, where participants planted mangrove seedlings and conducted workshops on the role of mangroves in mitigating coastal erosion and carbon absorption.
This initiative also promoted cross-border environmental collaboration, involving international students and researchers from both Indonesia and Malaysia. The programme successfully encouraged public participation in sustainable coastal management and raised awareness about the global fight against climate change.
FIKKIA Students Promote Coastal Conservation through Mangrove Planting at Cemara Beach
Students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FIKKIA) organised the Coastal Area Care (CAC) 2024 programme at Cemara Beach, Banyuwangi, as part of their academic and social responsibility commitment. The activity included mangrove planting, coastal clean-ups, and environmental education for local youth communities.
This hands-on event not only contributed to coastal restoration but also fostered environmental stewardship among participants. The programme strengthened community awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems in preventing coastal abrasion and supporting marine biodiversity.
FPK Encourages Rangkah Residents to Develop Sustainable Biofloc Aquaculture
The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) initiated a biofloc aquaculture training programme for residents of Rangkah, Surabaya, aiming to enhance sustainable fish farming practices. Participants were introduced to environmentally friendly aquaculture techniques that optimise water use and reduce waste.
This initiative supported local fishers and small businesses in maintaining productive yet sustainable aquaculture systems, contributing to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems. It also encouraged the use of technological innovation to promote eco-friendly fisheries management.
MAROCLAW+ Faculty of Law Participates in National Discussion on Marine Law Enforcement
The Ocean Law Studies and State’s Interest Protection Centre (MAROCLAW+) from the Faculty of Law participated as expert speakers in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) hosted by the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (BAKAMLA). The session focused on strengthening maritime law enforcement and addressing issues related to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Indonesian waters.
Through this collaboration, Universitas Airlangga contributed academic insights into improving marine resource governance and regulatory frameworks, reinforcing the university’s commitment to sustainable marine conservation.
Collaborative Effort for Brantas River Conservation and Women Empowerment
In response to the Brantas River crisis, the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) collaborated with TU Delft (Netherlands), regional environmental agencies, and NGOs to conduct river conservation campaigns and educational workshops. The initiative included river clean-ups, monitoring system development, and women’s empowerment programmes to enhance local participation in maintaining water quality.
This project demonstrated an interdisciplinary approach to sustainable freshwater management, integrating environmental technology, education, and gender inclusivity.
Faculty of Humanities Revitalises Pengkolan Beach through “Pedalaman 2.0”
The Faculty of Humanities (FIB) initiated the Pedalaman 2.0 programme to revitalise Pengkolan Beach, Lamongan, in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism (Disbudpar), the Environmental Agency (DLH), and youth environmental groups. Activities included beach clean-ups, the planting of 110 mangrove seedlings, and environmental education sessions for the local community.
This initiative aimed to restore coastal ecosy stems while promoting sustainable ecotourism and community participation in environmental stewardship. The programme successfully integrated cultural and ecological perspectives in coastal conservation.
