As part of its commitment to sustainability, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has established a Climate Action Plan with a target to become a net-zero campus by 2030. This ambitious plan, formalized under Policy 332/UN3/HM/2022, is fully endorsed by the government and involves active collaboration with local and national bodies. UNAIR’s roadmap to carbon neutrality focuses on significant emission reductions, renewable energy innovations, and the expansion of green spaces.

Emission Reduction and Sustainable Transportation Initiatives

Key elements of the Climate Action Plan include an emission reduction scheme across campus. To achieve this, UNAIR has implemented inter-campus shuttle bus services, effectively reducing the need for individual motorized transport and minimizing campus-wide carbon emissions. Further restrictions on motorized vehicles within the campus boundaries encourage the university community to opt for eco-friendly commuting options, advancing both air quality and environmental goals.

Expanding Green Spaces and Renewable Energy Use

In line with its Green Campus initiatives, UNAIR has expanded green spaces throughout its campuses, integrating sustainability into the built environment. This approach not only enhances the campus’s ecological resilience but also actively contributes to carbon sequestration efforts. Renewable energy projects, including the installation of solar panels across key facilities, highlight UNAIR’s dedication to reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources and fostering a sustainable future.

Collaboration with National and Local Climate Bodies

UNAIR's Climate Action Plan extends beyond campus boundaries, engaging with national initiatives to amplify its impact. The university actively participates in the Indonesian University Climate Conference, a collaborative effort with the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), which supports Indonesia’s 2050 zero-emission objective. Through this partnership, UNAIR aligns its climate strategy with national climate priorities, emphasizing renewable energy development and emissions reduction.

Additionally, UNAIR contributes to the National Research Consortium on Climate Crisis Prevention and is an integral part of the Green Academy platform established by Bappenas. Recognizing the importance of community participation in sustainable change, UNAIR’s Climate Action Plan is shared with local community groups and environmental organizations. The SDGs Center at UNAIR plays a pivotal role in facilitating these community dialogues, creating an inclusive space for residents to discuss climate action strategies.
