In line with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has been actively collaborating with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to address key health and environmental challenges in Indonesia. By joining forces with Smile Train Indonesia and Ecoton, UNAIR is working to promote sustainable practices, raise public awareness, and deliver impactful services to local communities.

Smile Train Indonesia Partnership: Establishing a National Cleft Center

UNAIR's collaboration with Smile Train Indonesia addresses significant health issues by offering specialized care to children with cleft lip and palate. Through this partnership, UNAIR’s Faculty of Dental and Oral Health, alongside the Dental and Oral Education Hospital, provides advanced treatments and comprehensive care. A notable milestone of this partnership is the development of a Cleft Center, funded by Smile Train Indonesia, intended to become a national referral hub. The Cleft Center will serve patients from across the country, providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary support—ranging from surgical treatment to speech therapy—while also working toward community education and health awareness. This collaboration not only improves patient outcomes but also aligns with UNAIR's commitment to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), emphasizing accessible, quality healthcare.

Environmental Stewardship with Ecoton: SDGs Festival and Public Awareness on Microplastics

UNAIR also joined forces with Ecoton, a leading environmental NGO, to educate the community on pressing environmental concerns. As part of the SDGs Festival 2023, UNAIR invited Ecoton to deliver an inspirational talk focused on environmental management, particularly highlighting the harmful impacts of microplastics on health and ecosystems. Ecoton’s exhibition at the festival, called "Yuyuk Exhibition," provided visitors with an engaging experience, showcasing the pervasiveness of microplastics and educating the public on actionable steps to reduce plastic consumption and waste.

Ecoton's participation not only brought critical environmental issues to light but also reinforced UNAIR's dedication to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by encouraging community-driven approaches to sustainability. This event demonstrated UNAIR’s proactive approach to fostering partnerships that empower communities to adopt environmentally conscious practices.

Through partnerships with NGOs like Smile Train Indonesia and Ecoton, UNAIR underscores its mission to integrate sustainable practices across health and environmental sectors. These collaborations provide critical support and innovative solutions to meet the needs of Indonesian communities while reinforcing UNAIR's commitment to the SDGs. By creating national health centers, promoting educational events, and offering hands-on experiences at the SDGs Festival, UNAIR continues to drive forward community-engaged solutions that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
