Universitas Airlangga Strengthens Community Partnership to Preserve Shared Aquatic Ecosystems

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is committed to safeguarding shared aquatic ecosystems through close collaboration with local communities. By partnering on a range of environmental initiatives, UNAIR is helping to restore biodiversity, promote sustainable practices, and foster ecological stewardship across Indonesia.

In 2023, UNAIR’s Aesculap Environmental Study Group from the Faculty of Medicine, in partnership with GENCORPS, initiated a reforestation project on Mount Penanggungan in Mojokerto. Planting 17 native trees, the program aimed to enhance watershed health, directly benefiting the Brantas watershed region, which is essential for both terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity.

Through the Airlangga Community Development Hub (ACDH), the Faculty of Pharmacy conducted educational outreach in Gili Iyang, Madura, introducing local residents to the health benefits of sea grapes (Caulerpa sp.). By encouraging the sustainable harvesting of sea grapes for their antioxidant, antibacterial, and immune-boosting properties, UNAIR promotes ecological balance while supporting the health and economy of coastal communities.

Furthermore, UNAIR’s Airventure program, in collaboration with the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) consortium, gathered 114 participants from 10 countries in Surabaya and Banyuwangi. This program emphasized marine conservation and sustainable blue economy practices. Activities included mangrove conservation workshops at the Wonorejo Mangrove Forest and turtle release initiatives at Bom Beach, Banyuwangi, which play a crucial role in maintaining marine ecosystems and protecting coastal biodiversity.

Universitas Airlangga’s Collaboration with NGOs Strengthens Climate Adaptation Efforts in Local Communities

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is actively engaged in collaborative climate adaptation efforts with NGOs, focusing on equipping local communities with practical knowledge and skills to build resilience against climate change impacts. These initiatives, carried out in collaboration with various environmental and community-focused organizations, represent UNAIR's dedication to sustainable development and climate resilience at the grassroots level.

Climate-Resilient Practices Workshops in Gresik

In partnership with the Indonesian Environmental Forum and the Green Earth Community, UNAIR organized a series of workshops in Gresik to empower local residents and fishery workers with climate-resilient practices. Over 300 participants attended these sessions, where they learned adaptive strategies to protect their livelihoods from climate-related challenges. The training emphasized sustainable fishing practices, water resource management, and practical methods for reducing environmental vulnerabilities in coastal and agricultural sectors.

Disaster Risk Management Training in Mojokerto

To bolster disaster preparedness, UNAIR’s postgraduate students from the Master’s Program in Disaster Management conducted a disaster risk management training session for 225 volunteers from the Indonesian Inter-Democratic Radio (RAPI) in Mojokerto. This collaboration aimed at enhancing community response to climate-induced emergencies by equipping participants with essential skills in emergency planning, risk assessment, and on-ground rescue techniques. This training is crucial for building community resilience in areas susceptible to climate-related disasters.

Airlangga Climate Fest: Fostering Sustainable Waste Management

In collaboration with the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Management Site from Banyuwangi, UNAIR hosted the Airlangga Climate Fest as a platform for environmental dialogue and community engagement. This event brought together NGOs, government agencies, and international experts to discuss sustainable waste management—a key aspect of climate adaptation. By addressing waste management, the Climate Fest promoted practices that not only reduce environmental hazards but also contribute to climate resilience by supporting a circular economy model. Sustainable waste management practices are vital in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing waste as resources, aligning with UNAIR's long-term climate adaptation goals.

Climate Literacy and Environmental Awareness with BMKG

Partnering with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), UNAIR held a Climate and Environmental Action session for 145 participants, including local students and community members. This event was part of a broader initiative to raise awareness about climate adaptation and build a disaster-resilient community. By engaging youth and local groups in climate literacy, UNAIR promotes proactive climate action, equipping participants with the knowledge needed to respond to environmental challenges. This initiative, in collaboration with BMKG, reflects UNAIR's dedication to fostering climate awareness beyond campus.

Building Health Resilience through ASEAN+3 Vaccine Innovation

At the 6th ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference in 2023, UNAIR spearheaded discussions on advancing public health, showcasing its groundbreaking vaccine initiative, INAVAC. Joined by leaders from across Southeast Asia and East Asia, the conference centered on scaling vaccine development and industry collaboration to bolster regional health security in alignment with SDG 3. UNAIR’s leadership and innovation in health demonstrate the power of collaborative, cross-sector partnerships to drive forward impactful solutions for global health resilience.

Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance with Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases

As part of its commitment to combat global health threats, UNAIR is collaborating with Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This crucial partnership focuses on research to curtail the rise of AMR, a significant health threat worldwide, offering data-driven policies and solutions. Through this collaboration, UNAIR is contributing to a global framework that supports SDG 3 and strengthens health systems against future risks.

Empowering Inclusive Education with Thailand's NIDA

UNAIR is also making strides in inclusive education through a partnership with Thailand’s National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA). By sharing insights and strategies, both institutions are advancing SDG 4 on quality education and SDG 17 on partnerships, fostering educational programs that address the diverse needs of students worldwide. This partnership underscores UNAIR’s commitment to breaking down barriers to education, ensuring that inclusivity and sustainability remain at the forefront of global learning initiatives.

Creating Sustainable Cities with Busan’s Smart City Collaboration

Recognizing the urgent need to address environmental challenges, UNAIR has partnered with the Busan Foundation for International Cooperation (BFIC) to develop Smart City and Green City technologies in Surabaya.
