Universitas Airlangga Embarks on Energy-Efficient Upgrades for Existing Campus Buildings

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has committed to a series of annual building upgrades that emphasize energy efficiency, aligning with its long-term sustainability and green campus goals. Guided by Rector's Decree No. 1074/UN3/2021 on Energy-Saving Policies and No. 1050/UN3/2021 on Green Campus Initiatives, UNAIR is actively transforming its infrastructure to incorporate advanced energy-efficient technologies.

Strategic Upgrades for Sustainable Campus Buildings

As part of its continuous efforts, UNAIR's energy-efficient renovation plan includes retrofitting and improving existing facilities. In 2023, UNAIR successfully renovated the Nutrition Laboratory at The Faculty of Public Health, implementing smart building procedures outlined in Decree PP-UNAIR-MUN-01-17. The renovation prioritized LED lighting installations and enhanced ventilation systems, ensuring and energy-efficient, clean, and sterile environment essential for laboratory operations.

This laboratory upgrade reflects UNAIR's commitment to energy-efficient design, creating healthier and more sustainable workspaces that meet modern environmental standards.

Harnessing Solar Power for a Cleaner Energy Profile

In addition to retrofitting existing buildings, UNAIR has intergrated solar panel installations on the student dormitory building, generating an impressive daily average of 30 kW. This solar power system reduces the university's dependence non-renewable energy sources, offering a sustainable energy solution that complements the dormitory's needs.

Similary, the Airlangga Sharia & Entrepreneurship Education Center has also adopted solar power, underscoring UNAIR's commitment to renewable energy and its focus on reducing campus-wide carbon emissions. Together, these installations represent a broader effort to transition the campus to sustainable energy sources, contributing to national energy efficiency goals.

Universitas Airlangga Uses Energy Efficiency Based Facilities

SDGs Center UNAIR - As a world-class university, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to improve in various aspects, one of which is to create a sustainable campus. As currently being pursued, UNAIR focuses on creating sustainable and environmentally friendly campus facilities and infrastructure. By implementing energy efficiency, universities can reduce the amount of energy used.

The Directorate of Infrastructure, Universitas Airlangga, has designed a program to improve the efficiency of energy use in buildings within the Airlangga University. It is in accordance with the commitment to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Program and concern for the environment. These programs include the following:

Solar Panel Solar panels are a technology that can convert solar energy into electrical energy that can be used directly. UNAIR also uses this technology as a form of energy efficiency. The solar panels owned by Universitas Airlangga are scattered in several places, such as on the rooftop of the FTMM (Faculty of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Technology) building, street lighting on campus B UNAIR, and in the FEB (Faculty of Economics and Business) area as a Mobile Solar Charging Station.

Currently, Universitas Airlangga has produced 123379.2 kWh of power from the installation of renewable energy solar cells. In addition, the Directorate of Infrastructure has also installed an inverter for the building's solar cell which is still off the grid. The goal of the inverter installation is to convert the off-grid system to an on-grid one, allowing for more efficient use of the solar cell's output.

LED Lamps The use of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps is highly recommended as a form of energy efficiency. LED lamps use much less energy than incandescent lamps and produce better light than fluorescent lamps. LED lights have also been used in almost all rooms on the Airlangga University campus. Replacing incandescent lamps with LEDs reduces the use of electrical energy around the UNAIR campus.

The Directorate of Infrastructure requires the replacement of non-LED lamps with LED lamps. Currently, new buildings under the Directorate of Infrastructure have used LED lights which are more energy efficient. In addition, there is a policy for replacing old damaged air conditioners with AC inverters and other lower power electronic devices.

Building Automatic Building Automatic System is a system that helps in controlling facilities such as AC (Air Conditioning), Lighting, and Escalators. Airlangga University also implements the Building Automatic System. The Airlangga Tower, and Campus area B is now the building that has integrated energy efficiency optimally. The BAS (Building Automatic System) system is currently in place at the Airlangga Tower building. This system connects all of the systems in the building, from the energy management system to the security system.

The Directorate of Infrastructure has included elements in the future planning program for structures that are being developed, such as the Pringgodigdo Building at Universitas Airlangga, that need the installation of BAS and Domestic Wastewater Management.

Automatic Water Automatic water faucets are created with sensor technology. The existence of this technology reduces water wastage so that it can help to save water. Almost all water faucets at Airlangga University have been replaced with automatic water faucets. This is in line with the goal of sustainable development to pay attention to energy use

Motion Sensor Installation Another program related to energy efficiency is the installation of motion sensors to turn on room lights. This Motion Sensor will later be installed in several rooms in the building that has an auditorium such as the Airlangga Tower Building, ANNEX Building and Campus C Joint Lecture Building.
