Universitas Airlangga Hosts Knowledge-Sharing Events for Fisherwomen and Local Producers, Supporting Sustainable Economic Growth

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is playing a pivotal role in enhancing the livelihoods and economic resilience of local fishermen and food producers in East Java. Through a series of knowledge-sharing events and training sessions, UNAIR empowers communities in Bangkalan, Madura, and Kenjeran, Surabaya, by providing skills, resources, and connections to improve sustainable fishery practices and diversify income opportunities.

Empowering Fisherwomen in Bangkalan: Skills for Sustainable Economic Impact

In partnership with the Infaq Management Institute (LMI) and Bank Indonesia, UNAIR conducted a specialized program aimed at empowering fisherwomen in Bangkalan, Madura. This training provided women with the skills to process and add value to their marine catch, transforming it into products with higher market demand. The program focused on practical skills such as processing, packaging, and marketing seafood products, equipping participants to enhance the value of their catch and access broader markets. These sessions foster greater economic independence among fisherwomen, enabling them to contribute more substantially to their families and communities.

The training also included discussion forums where fisherwomen could network, share experiences, and explore collaborative opportunities. By providing a platform for dialogue, UNAIR facilitates ongoing knowledge exchange, encouraging sustainable fishery practices while building a robust support network among local fisherwomen.

Improving Economic Conditions for Fishermen in Kenjeran through Product Diversification

Similarly, UNAIR has extended its outreach to Kenjeran, Surabaya, with tailored training programs that emphasize product diversification and good manufacturing practices (GMP). The training focuses on introducing fishermen to value-added processes that transform raw fishery products into market-ready goods. Fishermen and their spouses are trained in essential GMP principles, including hygienic processing, quality control, and sustainable packaging, to ensure products meet market standards and safety regulations.

The program also includes interactive sessions, where participants discuss strategies for improving product quality and marketing techniques tailored to fisheries. These sessions encourage the fishermen and their families to experiment with new ways of preparing and packaging their catches, including turning vegetables and seafood into dried products and snacks suitable for online and retail markets. By diversifying their offerings, the fishermen of Kenjeran are equipped to earn additional income streams, making their businesses more resilient to market fluctuations.

By organizing these impactful events, Universitas Airlangga demonstrates a comprehensive approach to community engagement, knowledge-sharing, and sustainable development. Through collaboration with institutions like Bank Indonesia, UNAIR is building a sustainable support system for East Java’s fishery communities, helping them create products that meet market demands while supporting local food security and economic stability.

Farmers are encouraged to conduct soil and water quality assessments to enhance crop yields and protect natural resources.
