In its commitment to environmental sustainability, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) conducts systematic energy reviews across its campuses, with a focus on identifying and addressing high energy usage and wastage areas. These efforts are part of UNAIR’s broader mission to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency, aligning with global sustainability goals.

The Logistics, Security, Order, and Environment Directorate at UNAIR leads detailed audits to assess energy consumption patterns in all academic buildings, laboratories, dormitories, and campus facilities. The 2023 findings highlighted a significant amount of energy consumption, with Scope 1 emissions measured at 832.15 tCO₂eq, and Scope 2 emissions—the primary contributor—at 21,262.46 tCO₂eq. By closely tracking these figures, UNAIR pinpoints specific areas for improvement, particularly in electricity usage, which contributes substantially to overall energy consumption.

Expanding Renewable Energy Sources

To reduce reliance on non-renewable sources, UNAIR has invested in renewable energy infrastructure across its campuses. Current solar installations have a combined capacity of 280.6 kWp, generating an impressive annual output of 808,128 kWh. To further expand its clean energy portfolio, UNAIR plans to install a wind turbine system in 2024, with a projected annual production of 10,000 watts. This shift not only decreases indirect emissions but also represents a major step in UNAIR’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.

Sustainable Green Spaces

In addition to energy efficiency upgrades, UNAIR leverages green spaces for natural carbon absorption across its three campuses. Spanning a total of 651,993 square meters, these spaces have the potential to absorb up to 3,585.96 tonnes of CO₂ each year, calculated at an absorption rate of 0.0055 tonnes per square meter. This green infrastructure not only reduces carbon levels but enhances campus biodiversity, creating a healthier and more sustainable environment for students and staff.

Future Commitments

With energy audits revealing insights into areas of high consumption, UNAIR is doubling down on its commitment to renewable energy, sustainable construction, and ongoing carbon reduction efforts. As part of this vision, the university plans to introduce further green technologies, optimized heating and cooling systems, and educational initiatives to promote a sustainable lifestyle among the campus community.
