In its commitment to sustainable campus operations and environmental stewardship, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has established a robust plan to minimize physical, chemical, and biological alterations of related aquatic ecosystems. Guided by a series of official policies, UNAIR is ensuring that its impact on surrounding water bodies remains minimal while promoting sustainable practices across its campus.

The framework for this plan is outlined in Guidelines for Managing an Environmentally Friendly Campus, backed by Rector’s Decree No. 2094/UN3/2016. This document emphasizes a campus-wide approach to environmental protection, supporting practices that safeguard both marine and land ecosystems. Additionally, Circular Letter No. 326/UN3/HM/2021 reinforces these guidelines, advocating preventive measures to protect natural habitats from pollution and degradation.

A central component of this plan is UNAIR’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL), designed to treat wastewater generated from campus facilities, including toilets, sinks, canteens, prayer rooms, and laboratories. The IPAL’s five key goals demonstrate a comprehensive approach to aquatic ecosystem protection:

Efficient wastewater treatment to eliminate pollutants before discharge, ensuring a minimal ecological footprint.

Commitment to ecosystem preservation, reflecting UNAIR’s dedication to sustainable resource management.

Compliance with environmental regulations, ensuring campus activities align with national and international environmental standards.

Water conservation through recycling, where treated water is reused for irrigation, supporting circular water management.

Educational and research opportunities for students and faculty, fostering innovation in wastewater management and environmental science.

In addition to wastewater treatment, UNAIR follows SOP-UNAIR-DSP-DSP23, a standard operating procedure for the handling and disposal of hazardous waste. This protocol ensures that chemicals and other potentially harmful substances are managed responsibly, preventing contamination of nearby water systems and safeguarding aquatic biodiversity.
