Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is taking a proactive role in educating local communities on the dangers of overfishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and other destructive practices that threaten marine ecosystems. Given the recent extinction of the Java Ray due to overfishing and harmful fishing techniques, UNAIR's Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences has intensified its outreach initiatives to promote sustainable methods and preserve Indonesia's aquatic resources.

Movement Alive Society Program

One of UNAIR’s flagship community programs is the “Introduction Knowledge About Nutrients—Movement Alive Society,” held in Kepetingan Village, targeting local fishermen who rely on coastal resources. This program provides training on sustainable fishing techniques, focusing on the transition from traditional methods to modern practices that are both environmentally responsible and economically viable. Local fishermen are educated on the impact of IUU fishing and receive guidance on techniques that reduce bycatch and prevent overexploitation.

MAROCLAW+ Initiative: Bridging Law and Marine Conservation

MAROCLAW+

The Marine and Ocean Law Studies and State’s Interest Protection (MAROCLAW+) initiative is another essential component of UNAIR’s outreach. The program focuses on marine ecosystem protection through legal frameworks, policy research, and collaboration with government bodies, NGOs, and academic institutions. MAROCLAW+ also involves students in research and advocacy, providing hands-on learning experiences while engaging directly with national and local stakeholders. This initiative not only emphasizes sustainable marine resource management but also raises awareness of the legal measures available to combat IUU fishing and preserve marine biodiversity.

Expert Insight on Marine Ecosystem Protection

Java Ray

In light of the Java Ray's extinction, UNAIR’s experts have also stressed the urgency of sustainable fisheries management. Faculty members regularly address the importance of effective aquatic resource management in local forums and provide evidence-based recommendations for regulatory action. By engaging the community and highlighting cases like the Java Ray, UNAIR’s fisheries and marine law experts bring critical issues to the forefront, advocating for preservation and sustainable practices that align with SDG 14.
