Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment by providing extensive mentoring, counseling, and peer support for students, staff, and faculty from underrepresented groups. These initiatives aim to create a supportive and accessible academic setting for all.

Peer Counseling through Airlangga Safe Space 

The Airlangga Safe Space (ASAP) program is a peer-led counseling initiative designed to offer emotional support and guidance. Managed by trained peers, ASAP provides a safe environment where individuals can freely discuss challenges related to academic and personal life, helping to alleviate stress and build resilience in the university community.

Entrepreneurial Programs Supporting Inclusivity

The Directorate of Career Development at UNAIR offers multiple entrepreneurial programs—Airlangga Young Entrepreneur, Airlangga Entrepreneur Club, and Airlanggapreneur—which provide mentoring, business development bootcamps, and funding assistance for students and staff, including those with disabilities and from underrepresented groups. These programs enable participants to learn from seasoned entrepreneurs and receive guidance and resources to launch their own businesses. This initiative encourages entrepreneurial growth among disadvantaged groups, empowering them to pursue economic independence.

Free English Language Support for Low-Income Students

ELPT UNAIR

In a bid to support low-income students and ensure they meet graduation requirements, UNAIR offers Free Intensive English Classes and Free English Language Proficiency Tests (ELPT). These classes provide foundational language skills, while the ELPT ensures students have the proficiency needed for academic and professional success. This support initiative helps students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds achieve essential competencies. 

Through these dedicated mentoring, counseling, and peer support programs, Universitas Airlangga reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that all members of its community—especially those from underrepresented groups—have the resources and support they need to thrive.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting students, faculty, and staff with disabilities through a range of dedicated services and resources. The university’s Directorate of Education works collaboratively with faculty and the Airlangga Inclusive Learning (AIL) program to ensure an inclusive educational experience. This includes tailored learning adaptations, assistive technology, and comprehensive support services to meet diverse needs.

Customized Learning and Assistive Technology

Through close collaboration with faculty, UNAIR’s inclusive education team offers customized learning plans for students with disabilities, enhancing their academic experience. Assistive technologies such as screen readers and speech-to-text software are readily available, enabling these students to navigate coursework and materials effectively. This emphasis on customized, technology-assisted learning ensures accessibility across various academic disciplines.

The Airlangga Inclusive Learning (AIL) Program

AIL provides essential services specifically designed for students, lecturers, and staff with disabilities. This program includes:

Accessibility accommodations and mobility support to facilitate campus navigation

Counseling and tutorial sessions tailored for students with disabilities ensuring academic and emotional support

Book digitalization services for visually impaired students, allowing access to a wide range of academic materials

Sign language training and disability awareness workshops for volunteers in collaboration with the Bisindo and Surabaya Accessibility Team. These initiatives equip volunteers to assits students who use sign language and promote awareness within the campus community.

One notable success story is Nely Suwidyanti, a UNAIR graduate with Cerebral Palsy who completed both a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics and a Master’s degree in Public Policy. Her academic achievements underscore UNAIR's commitment to inclusivity, showing that disability support services are not only comprehensive but also transformative.
