Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) demonstrates a strong commitment to maintaining and extending ecosystems and biodiversity, especially in areas facing ecological threats. Through a range of research initiatives and community engagement, UNAIR actively supports the conservation of critical ecosystems across East Java, benefiting both plant and animal species under pressure.

Sea Turtle Conservation and Coastal Preservation

In Banyuwangi, UNAIR’s School of Health and Natural Sciences (SIKIA) has pioneered a comprehensive sea turtle conservation program, employing artificial incubation techniques for turtle eggs and restoring coastal pandan vegetation, a natural habitat essential for turtle nesting. In 2023, this program expanded with the launch of an eco-tourism and conservation education center at Pulau Santen Beach. This initiative not only protects sea turtles but also educates the local community, empowering residents to take active roles in coastal conservation efforts.

The Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline collaborates on mangrove reforestation and coral reef rehabilitation projects at Bangsring Beach. Mangrove forests play a crucial role in stabilizing coastlines, filtering pollutants, and providing habitats for marine life. UNAIR’s efforts involve replanting native mangrove species and restoring coral reefs, contributing to coastal resilience against climate impacts and supporting biodiversity. By educating local communities on sustainable marine practices, these projects foster stewardship for natural resources.

Biodiversity Research in Baluran National Park

Baluran National Park, often called the “African savanna of Java,” is home to endangered species like the Javan leopard and banteng. UNAIR’s ongoing research in the park focuses on preserving these species, studying their habitats, and identifying critical threats. In addition to animal conservation, UNAIR's researchers assess local flora diversity, such as macroalgae populations along Bama Beach, which are vital for marine health. This research directly informs park management practices, aiming to bolster species conservation and habitat restoration efforts.

UNAIR’s conservation initiatives integrate education and practical application, with programs like eco-tourism centers and community workshops offering hands-on conservation training to locals. These efforts not only protect ecosystems but also enhance community resilience and economic opportunity through eco-friendly tourism and sustainable resource use.
