UNAIR Meraih Penghargaan Peringkat ke-9 Dunia THE Impact 2025

Universitas Airlangga meraih prestasi gemilang dengan menduduki peringkat ke-9 dunia THE Impact 2025. Pencapaian itu juga menempatkan UNAIR pada posisi pertama di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara serta ke-2 di Asia dalam dampak perguruan tinggi terhadap Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prestasi ini mencerminkan kontribusi signifikan UNAIR pada 17 poin SDGs. Di antara 17 poin tersebut, UNAIR juga mendapatkan pengakuan dunia atas pencapaian peringkat pertama SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), peringkat ke-3 SDG 1 (No Poverty), peringkat ke-4 SDG 5 (Gender Equality), dan peringkat ke-29 SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

Dalam pernyataan resminya pada 18 Juni 2025, Times Higher Education (THE) memuji UNAIR sebagai institusi paling berkelanjutan dari negara ekonomi berkembang. Pujian itu wajar didapatkan oleh UNAIR mengingat peringkat UNAIR melonjak signifikan dari ke-81 dunia (2024) ke-9 dunia (2025). Atas prestasi tersebut, THE memberikan penghargaan secara langsung kepada UNAIR dalam Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) di Istanbul, Turki, pada 16-19 Juni 2025. A. Safril Mubah, Koordinator Tim Ahli SDGs UNAIR, mewakili UNAIR menerima penghargaan yang diberikan secara langsung oleh Julie Wilkens McMahon, Vice President THE dan Direktur Kawasan Asia Pasifik.

Dalam pertemuan dengan Safril, Julie memandang UNAIR telah menampilkan performa fantastis dalam THE Impact Rankings. “Congratulations to UNAIR for such a wonderful achievement!,” kata Julie. Safril menyambut baik apresiasi tersebut dan mendorong untuk meningkatkan kolaborasi secara berkelanjutan di masa depan. Dia mengungkapkan bahwa UNAIR berhasil meraih peringkat ke-9 dunia berkat kontribusi semua pihak di UNAIR yang saling berkolaborasi secara sinergis untuk memberikan dampak positif signifikan terhadap pencapaian tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan. “Kami mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua sivitas akademika UNAIR yang telah berperan aktif dalam pengajaran, penelitian, dan pengabdian dalam berbagai bidang yang sejalan dengan SDGs. Penghargaan ini merupakan bukti bahwa UNAIR telah menjalankan program yang berdampak luas bagi peningkatan kualitas hidup masyarakat,” ujar Safril.

THE mengumumkan UNAIR sebagai perguruan tinggi peringkat ke-9 dunia THE Impact Ranking 2025 pada Global Sustainbale Development Congress di Istanbul, 16-19 Juni 2025.

Prestasi UNAIR mencapai peringkat ke-9 THE Impact menempatkan institusi pendidikan Indonesia sebagai aktor penting pencapaian tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan pada tingkat global. Keunggulan UNAIR dalam SDG 6 menggambarkan komitmen Indonesia dalam penyediaan air bersih untuk kebutuhan masyarakat dunia. Melalui pencapaian global ini, UNAIR membuktikan peran strategisnya sebagai perguruan tinggi yang berkontribusi besar dalam penyelesaian aneka permasalahan yang dihadapi masyarakat.

UNAIR Builds Sustainable Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Through Innovation and Startup Support.

Surabaya – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to play a leading role in driving sustainable economic growth through innovation and entrepreneurship. Through its Business and Technology Incubation Development Agency (BPBRIN) and the Airlangga Technopreneur and Venture Incubator (ATAVI), UNAIR has empowered local communities, SMEs, and student-led startups with the tools, training, and networks needed to build financially and socially sustainable businesses. As part of its ongoing commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, UNAIR provides an integrated incubation system that includes co-working spaces, innovation labs, startup incubation facilities, and customized training in creative content, copywriting, business model development, and digital skills. "Innovation thrives where support systems are strong. At UNAIR, we are not only cultivating ideas—we are building ecosystems," said Dr. Nafiq, Head of BPBRIN UNAIR.

Startup Camps, Competitions, and Capital Access

In 2024, UNAIR organized the Airlangga Startup Camp, an intensive program featuring mentorship, pitching practice, and networking sessions. The event attracted dozens of young innovators eager to refine their business models with the help of experienced entrepreneurs and business coaches. This was followed by the Airlangga Startup Festival & Competition, which brought together 38 promising startups. These startups received mentorship from venture capitalists, participated in non-degree business training programs, and had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to potential investors. To bridge the gap between innovative ideas and investment capital, UNAIR also hosts capital market matching events, facilitating strategic meetings between entrepreneurs and investors. The goal is to promote IPO opportunities and expand access to financial growth for small and medium enterprises.

In early December 2024, the serene hills of Prigen, Pasuruan, became the backdrop for a transformative gathering of young innovators. Universitas Airlangga, through its Airlangga Technopreneur and Venture Incubator (ATAVI) under the Business and Startup Incubation Development Agency (BPBRIN), held the Airlangga Startup Camp 2024. For three full days at the Royal Senyiur Hotel, dozens of aspiring entrepreneurs immersed themselves in mentorship, networking, and idea-building. Among them were not only students and startups nurtured by UNAIR but also special guests from partner universities such as Andalas University.

The camp was more than just a training session; it was a bold statement of commitment to nurturing the next generation of Indonesian entrepreneurs. “Airlangga Startup Camp is designed to build a strong startup ecosystem and to help our students and alumni transform their creative ideas into solutions that matter,” said Dr. Achsania Hendratmi, Head of ATAVI, in her opening remarks.

The program unfolded with dynamic activities tailored to sharpen entrepreneurial skills. Participants engaged in intensive mentoring sessions with industry experts, gained practical advice on developing sustainable business models, and built valuable networks for future collaboration. Pitching sessions added to the excitement, where participants presented their ideas in front of mentors, practitioners, and potential investors. For many, it was a first glimpse into the high-stakes world of venture creation.

For Alghany Perdana Arsyadi from Andalas University, the experience was eye-opening. He reflected on how the camp expanded his understanding of the startup ecosystem and gave him the confidence to pursue his business ideas with renewed determination. Stories like his captured the spirit of the event—empowering young minds to turn possibilities into action.

Impact and Sustainability

Since 2022, more than 200 startups have benefited from UNAIR’s programs. These startups gained access to mentorship, participated in business development workshops, utilized state-of-the-art facilities, and joined investor networking events—fostering a robust and sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem in East Java. "Our mission is to ensure that entrepreneurship becomes a viable and inclusive path for economic empowerment, especially among youth and marginalized communities," said Dr. Mira Febriani, manager of ATAVI. By integrating academic excellence with real-world business incubation, Universitas Airlangga is not only shaping future business leaders but also contributing to long-term economic resilience and social inclusion, in line with SDG 1: No Poverty.

As a university ranked highly in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, Universitas Airlangga remains committed to fulfilling its role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. Surabaya, Indonesia – In a strong commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to lead and influence policy formulation at local, national, and global levels, ensuring poverty eradication is central to development strategies. Local Leadership: Mainstreaming SDGs into Municipal Planning At the city level, UNAIR plays an integral role in shaping Surabaya’s Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD). Through expert recommendations and evidence-based inputs, UNAIR ensures that poverty reduction efforts are not only prioritized but also aligned with SDG indicators, creating a cohesive roadmap for inclusive local development.

In addition, UNAIR actively contributes to the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) of Surabaya City. This VLR initiative, which localizes the global SDG framework, benefits from UNAIR’s academic and policy insights, embedding clear targets and performance measures for poverty alleviation, especially in urban vulnerable communities.

National Engagement: Driving SDG 1 through Institutional Collaboration

On a national scale, UNAIR holds a strategic role as the 2024 President of the Indonesia SDGs Center Network, leading coordination among universities in supporting the national SDG agenda.

UNAIR academics serve as key contributors to Indonesia’s National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and the National Action Plan (RAN SDGs), developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas). These national frameworks integrate UNAIR's policy recommendations on multidimensional poverty, targeting not only income but also access to education, health, and employment.

Further, UNAIR contributes to Indonesia’s Voluntary National Review (VNR)—a global reporting mechanism to the United Nations—ensuring that grassroots realities and scientific perspectives are reflected in Indonesia’s global commitment to eradicating poverty. UNAIR also strengthens national capacity-building by sharing policy innovations and poverty-alleviation models in State Civil Apparatus (ASN) learning forums. These sessions provide practical strategies for government officials to replicate UNAIR’s approaches in other regions, from social protection programs to food security interventions. Global Impact: Bridging International Economic Insights and Local Solutions At the global level, UNAIR is an active partner with the World Bank, particularly through the Indonesia Economic Prospects (IEP) dissemination events. These collaborative efforts connect global macroeconomic and climate data with UNAIR’s localized poverty research, enabling policy harmonization that benefits the most impoverished populations.

By translating global economic trends into actionable national poverty strategies, UNAIR ensures that international development discourse is grounded in local realities, particularly those affecting food-insecure and low-income groups. Research-Based Solutions: Advancing Food Security and Policy Models Beyond advocacy, UNAIR’s academics actively contribute research and innovation that supports food security for impoverished communities—an essential component of SDG 1. UNAIR Champions Health and Well-being Through Basic Services Access Programs to Combat Poverty

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to demonstrate its commitment to poverty alleviation by implementing comprehensive programs that improve access to basic services in both health and standard of living for underserved communities. In the area of public health, UNAIR has launched community outreach efforts that train families in critical areas such as stunting prevention, complementary feeding, and anemia reduction. These trainings are designed to equip local populations with practical, science-based knowledge to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes. Furthermore, UNAIR provides multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) to pregnant women as a preventive measure against maternal malnutrition. Through its flagship Golden Village Program (Kampung Emas), the university has mentored over 30 districts across Indonesia, helping to strengthen maternal healthcare services, enhance early childhood nutrition, and reduce stunting risk. This program stands out as a sustainable, community-embedded initiative that creates long-term behavioral change by training local health workers and empowering families.

In 2024 alone, UNAIR awarded full scholarships to 1,237 students, covering both tuition fees and living costs. Each scholarship recipient is paired with a dedicated faculty mentor who provides continuous academic guidance. Universitas Airlangga Targets Inclusive Access for Students from Low-Income Households

SDGs NEWS - Universitas Airlangga As part of its commitment to inclusive education and poverty alleviation under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty, UNAIR has set a bold institutional target to admit students from the bottom 20% of household income groups.

Outlined in its 2021–2025 Strategic Plan and formalized through Rector’s Decree No. 10/UN3/2021 on Student Admissions, the university aims for at least 40% of its annual student intake to come from low-income households. This strategic objective is directly aligned with national education inclusion goals and global sustainable development efforts.

To achieve this target, UNAIR offers a comprehensive range of support through scholarship programs, including

KIP-Kuliah (KIP College Program) for economically disadvantaged students,
The Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP),
And the ADik Scholarship, specifically designed for students from frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions.

In 2024, 35.7% of newly admitted students were verified as coming from households in the bottom income quintile, based on national government databases and validated income documentation. Notably, 183 students from Papua and West Papua were awarded the ADik scholarship, enhancing access for students from some of Indonesia’s most underserved regions.

To ensure transparency and impact, the Directorate of Student Affairs conducts annual monitoring of progress toward this access target, refining outreach and support mechanisms accordingly.

"Education is a key driver in breaking the cycle of poverty. This commitment ensures Universitas Airlangga remains a national leader in inclusive higher education,” said Prof. Nasih, Rector of Universitas Airlangga.

Universitas Airlangga’s Commitment to Supporting International Students from Low and Lower-Middle Income Countries

SDGs UNAIR – Universitas Airlangga remains steadfast in its commitment to providing support through scholarships to students from lower-middle-income countries, developing and putting into practice various scholarship programs that increase access to education. UNAIR enables the student to attain quality education in Indonesia irrespective of economic status.

Universitas Airlangga still shows its commitment to the equity of opportunity to get higher education through various programs, especially for students from low and lower-middle-income countries. In line with the commitment to global diversity and inclusivity, UNAIR welcomes more than 250 students from abroad, including Malaysia, Timor Leste, Pakistan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, and many other countries. All these students receive strong support through effective schemes that help ensure academic success and personal development.

The flagship programs of the university are also represented by the Airlangga Development Scholarship, ADS, that covers full or partial scholarships for its eligible students. Another complementary scholarship in the framework of the ADS program is Developing Countries Partnership or similar with Kemitraan Negara Berkembang KNB Scholarship sponsored by the government, which targets students from developing nations. Self-pay programs extend a lot financially by way of scholarships and grants for tuition fees, living expenses, and all other academic-related expenditure, thus allowing students to pursue their studies without inhibitions.

Along with accommodation allowances, UNAIR facilitates more academic experiences for international students through its research grants and the opportunity to participate in community service. The activities contribute to the nurturing of academic excellence and, at the same time, urge them toward service for the communities of the locality where they stay, thus enriching the experience even more.

Language and Cultural Integration

Universitas Airlangga would create LINGUA as the Indonesian Language learning module at Universitas Airlangga. International students who want to increase their knowledge and experience in learning Indonesian language and culture may consider it. LINGUA will be one vehicle in which the students learn how to become global citizens through various cultural and educational activities. LINGUA offers a full tuition fee waiver to Indonesian language and culture enthusiasts willing to learn and understand the subjects via intensive lessons. This will be an online program conducted during one semester (5 months). It comprises two learning programs, namely LINGUA Level A1 & A2, which focuses on the beginner level, and LINGUA Level B1 & B2, comprising the intermediate level lesson. This will develop the understanding and development of Indonesian language and culture by on-site learning for their practical life-skills. On completion of this program, students would acquire the certificate of attendance and a transferable academic transcript.

Focus on Global Development and Sustainability

Accordingly, UNAIR's commitment to contributing to the development of the world in line with its vision and mission has ensured that it provides a specialist course for Sustainable Development Goals open to all international students. This course will finally provide students with the knowledge and skills to solve pressing global challenges: poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. The program avails students with intimate knowledge of the SDGs and ways they might contribute to those goals within their countries and beyond. The SDG course also contributes to the broader contribution of UNAIR in the integration of global development issues into its curriculum, thus fostering an enabling academic atmosphere where sustainability is valued and the university inspires the students to become leaders in making positive changes both locally and internationally.

Holistic Support for International Students

The support given to international students by Universitas Airlangga does not stop at academic and financial help. It promises the welfare of all its students through the provision of counseling and wellness services free of charge for emotional and psychological needs, among others. Additionally, UNAIR supports access to career counseling and job placement centers through its Career Development Center. This helps the students prepare for life after graduation by creating professional networks and pragmatic experience. For this reason, through these mutual efforts, Universitas Airlangga remains committed to ensuring that its vision for global academic excellence is pursued and implemented in support of students from low and lower-middle-income countries. Thus, the multi-dimensional support system of the university makes certain that the students are academically empowered and, as future global citizens, they will be better prepared to contribute meaningfully toward the development of their respective homelands and the world at large.

Universitas Airlangga Organizes Training Programs to Enhance Access to Basic Services for All

SDGs - Universitas Airlangga Actively implements several training activities to increase access to basic services in multifarious groups within the community. The most prominent initiative has been taken by the Faculty of Public Health, which empowers the elderly population in Surabaya through training and education. The specific activities in this regard include training in education for elderly participants to become both consumers and producers of functional foods, especially fermented black garlic. The black garlic was selected due to its high content of antioxidants and bioactive compounds that confer numerous health benefits owing to its cholesterol-lowering effects, anti-allergic actions, anti-cancer properties, blood sugar regulation, among others. The program is specifically designed for improving the immunity of the elderly people through persuading them to consume functional foods rather than pharmaceutical health supplements. It also aims to enhance their understanding of healthy aging, prevention of COVID-19, non-communicable diseases, and functional foods' role in maintaining optimum health. For this reason, a health guidebook targeted at the elderly was given to the beneficiaries.

The Faculty of Nursing also plays a very important role in promoting access to essential health services through the provision of quality control training for food services in nursing homes. The program aims at educating cooks and caregivers in elderly care facilities about appropriate nutritional standards and good quality control practices, with the aim of ensuring that elderly residents receive an optimum dietary intake and hence promoting better overall health and wellbeing

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Pharmacy UNAIR has created an education program to support MSMEs in encouraging the usage of flowers from the butterfly pea for health drinks. In this case, the program trains participants in the processing of butterfly pea flowers into various consumable products, such as syrups and instant powder drinks. It was part of the training, which also includes information on the health benefits associated with this plant. The initiative will not only improve the quality of the health-based products emanating from the local resources but will also enhance marketability, whereby MSMEs shall be enabled to improve their standards of production and widen their market reach accordingly.

Through these initiatives, Universitas Airlangga showcases its dedication to enhancing access to essential services such as health education, nutrition, and entrepreneurial support, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
