UNAIR DEPLOYS DISASTER RESPONSE TEAM TO SUMATRA: RECTOR ATTENDS DEPLOYMENT CEREMONY, STRENGTHENS ACADEMIC SYNERGY FOR EMERGENCY ACTION

SDGs News — As part of its rapid response to natural disasters in Sumatra, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again mobilized a Disaster Emergency Response Team, sending volunteers to assist communities in crisis. The symbolic deployment ceremony was held on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) at Balai RUA, 4th Floor, Management Office, UNAIR MERR-C Campus, and was attended directly by UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin.

The team consists of a multidisciplinary group of volunteers from various sectors of the university, including the Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSKKA), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidisciplinary Studies (FTMM), and the Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB). The Faculty of Medicine (FK) team joined earlier UNAIR volunteers already stationed in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra on Thursday (December 4, 2025).

In his remarks, Prof. Madyan emphasized that as a higher education institution, UNAIR plays a vital role in alleviating the suffering of disaster victims, aligned with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which mandates engagement in education, research, and community service.

“Our presence in disaster-affected areas is not merely symbolic; it represents the university’s real responsibility to be part of the solution. We are proud that our medical teams, faculty, and students are actively contributing to recovery efforts in Sumatra,” he said.

He also shared that the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) had expressed appreciation for the active role of universities in responding to the recent landslides and flash floods in Sumatra.

“The Ministry strongly encourages universities to extend a helping hand. We are grateful that UNAIR began its mission last Thursday and has already treated hundreds of patients in the field,” said Prof. Madyan.

Prof. Madyan took the opportunity to deliver a personal message to all departing volunteers. He reminded them to maintain their health, uphold the university's good name, and be culturally sensitive while serving in the field.

“Aceh and Sumatra have cultural norms that differ from ours. I urge you to uphold proper ethics and conduct throughout your duties. This, too, is a form of service,” he advised.

The Rector also stressed the importance of carrying out the mission with sincerity and humility—reminding all volunteers not to view their task through a material lens but as a noble act of service.

“Once again, I wish you a safe journey. May your presence bring comfort to the victims and please do not see this as merely a duty, it is an act of devotion,” he concluded.

Head of Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB) UNAIR, Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., added that disaster response requires an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, leveraging academic, technological, medical, and social knowledge to deliver comprehensive and sustainable aid.

The deployed team will engage in a wide range of relief efforts including medical assistance, public health outreach, disaster education, and basic infrastructure recovery, strengthened by students and faculty from UNAIR's Graduate Program in Disaster Management, who bring professional expertise in risk mitigation and recovery planning.

Universitas Airlangga Provides Expert Policy Guidance to Government on Natural Resource Management and Social Welfare

In a concerted effort to support government policy-making on critical issues, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has been actively providing expert advice and evidence-based recommendations to local, regional, and national governments. Leveraging its academic expertise, UNAIR's involvement spans diverse sectors, including natural resource management, maritime space regulation, and social welfare initiatives.

In 2023, the Faculty of Law at UNAIR collaborated with the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia (DPD RI) to conduct a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Draft Bill on Natural Resource Management. This initiative provided DPD RI with crucial insights and policy recommendations, aimed at shaping Indonesia’s approach to sustainable resource utilization and conservation. The Faculty of Law’s involvement highlights UNAIR’s commitment to addressing legislative needs that balance development goals with environmental stewardship.

Further extending its influence in marine policy, UNAIR’s Faculty of Law joined forces with IPB University and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to tackle pressing issues in maritime space management. Focusing on Indonesia's Archipelagic Sea Lanes (ALKI) and the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS), the collaboration produced valuable policy recommendations that enhance Indonesia’s maritime security while promoting sustainable navigation. This partnership emphasizes UNAIR’s proactive approach to ensuring Indonesia’s maritime policies are aligned with both national interests and international standards.

In the realm of social welfare, UNAIR’s Center for Security and Welfare Studies (CSWS) played a pivotal role in advising the East Java government on the protection and empowerment of women and children affected by social conflicts. Working alongside key stakeholders, including DPRD (Regional House of Representatives), BAKESBANG (National Unity and Political Agency), and local civil society organizations, CSWS was instrumental in drafting a governor’s decree outlining action plans for social support and protection. This initiative underscores UNAIR’s dedication to fostering inclusive social policies that address the welfare needs of vulnerable groups.

UNAIR’s role as a trusted advisor on such critical topics demonstrates its commitment to SDG 16, which advocates for peace, justice, and strong institutions. By providing specialized expertise across multiple government levels, UNAIR continues to be a catalyst for positive change, supporting sustainable development and social equity in Indonesia.

Volunteer of SDGs Center UNAIR Representative of Indonesia at ASEF Policy Dialogue and ASEAN Youth Conference

Volunteer of SDGs Center Batch 1 in 2023, Merlina Dewi Khaerun Nisa, a student of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), has been selected to represent Indonesia at the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Policy Dialogue and ASEAN Youth Conference in Jakarta.

Merlina, an active volunteer at the SDG Center UNAIR, has been making waves with her commitment to various volunteer programs. Her contributions have earned her the honor of being chosen as one of the delegates from UNAIR to participate in the ASEF Policy Dialogue on November 2, 2023. Following this, she will also be representing her university and country at the ASEAN Youth Conference from November 3 to 5, 2023, in Jakarta.

SDGs Center UNAIR, where Merlina is actively involved, has been a hub for promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through various programs and initiatives. Merlina's being selected as a delegate to these events underscores her dedication to not only academic pursuits but also her passion for social responsibility.

The 9th ASEF Regional Conference on Higher Education (ARC9) project's report titled "Asia-Europe Higher Education Mapping: Working Towards the SDGs." (ASEF Policy Dialogue with Youth). in this event discussing the role of universities in supporting SDGs, Who is most involved, and who is in charge of achieving the SDGs? What is the role of students and civil society organizations? What is the key challenge?

Merlina said, "Well, from the idea that I conveyed after discussions with several other friends regarding the recommendation that We recommend the Ministers of Education allocate an earmarked budget for youth and student initiatives regarding sustainable development in higher education, insofar as such budgets are not yet implemented,"

"For sustainable development to take root in sufficient higher education institutions, it is important to allocate the budget to this objective. To get buy-in from the youth and encourage their contribution to sustainable development, it is essential to provide a budget. This recommendation is based on funding being one of the main problems in achieving the SDGs in both Asia and Europe," Merlina added. The output from ASEF is in the form of policy recommendations addressed to the ministry of education, which will be presented at the 9th ASEM Education Event Ministerial Meeting (ASEMME9) in January 2024.

The ASEAN Youth Conference discusses the role and actions of young leaders in creating a positive change in the problems that exist in ASEAN. AYC 2023 carries the theme "Guardians of the Sustainable Future for a Resilient ASEAN." In this event, delegates exchanged ideas and took part in voicing ideas and opinions in various fields of society, which were then implemented through real action in the form of international projects as a form of real contribution by youth in implementing the agenda of peace, stability, solidarity, unity, prosperity, and sustainability. in ASEAN.

Merlina's journey from a student at UNAIR to a representative at these esteemed conferences is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the caliber of students at UNAIR. As Merlina prepares to embark on this journey, UNAIR and the entire nation eagerly anticipate the valuable contributions she will bring to the discussions and the positive impact she will make on the global stage.

Universitas Airlangga Partners with Government on Policy-Focused Research to Advance Sustainable Development Goals

SDGs News - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to strengthen its role as a key research partner for Indonesian government departments, focusing on policy-oriented studies that address national and regional needs. Through dedicated research centers and strategic partnerships, UNAIR’s Faculty of Law conducts impactful research on topics ranging from international trade to maritime safety and constitutional governance.

One of UNAIR’s significant contributions is the Research Master Plan (2022-2026), spearheaded by the Faculty of Law. This plan underscores UNAIR’s commitment to developing regulatory frameworks that align with the SDGs. As part of this initiative, the Faculty of Law undertook a 2023 research project titled "WTO’s International Trade Strategy in Agriculture Based on SDG 2: Zero Hunger." This study explored the trade strategy’s implications for food security policies within the ASEAN region, providing critical insights for policymakers seeking to balance trade objectives with hunger reduction goals.

In collaboration with the Directorate of Navigation, Ministry of Transportation of Indonesia, UNAIR’s Center for Maritime and Ocean Law Studies (Maroclaw) conducted research focused on enhancing maritime safety. The study developed a monitoring system to improve the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) and Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lanes (ALKI), crucial maritime channels for national and international navigation. This collaboration not only enhances maritime security but also strengthens Indonesia’s compliance with international safety standards, supporting both national interests and regional stability.

UNAIR’s research efforts extend into constitutional studies through its Center for Constitutional and Government Studies, which partnered with the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI). This collaboration produced an in-depth analysis of state institutions and inter-institutional relationships, guiding reforms that enhance governance and institutional effectiveness in Indonesia.

Moreover, UNAIR has established dedicated centers for anti-corruption law, where scholars conduct research to inform national policies aimed at curbing corruption and promoting transparency. These centers position UNAIR as a thought leader in governance, with research that shapes policy and reinforces ethical standards across governmental institutions.

Universitas Airlangga Enhances Capacity-Building and Educational Outreach for Policy-Makers on Migrant Worker Protection and Natural Resource Management

Addressing complex social and policy issues, UNAIR’s approach covers topics ranging from migrant worker protection to sustainable resource management.

Supporting Migrant Worker Protections Across Borders

UNAIR’s Faculty of Law has taken a leadership role in advocating for migrant workers' rights, engaging in cross-border collaborations to support Indonesian workers abroad. In partnership with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), the Indonesian Consulate in Johor Baru, and stakeholders from Hong Kong and the Middle East, UNAIR has hosted a series of discussions aimed at understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by Indonesian migrant workers. These discussions facilitate UNAIR's ongoing efforts to develop tailored programs, research, and publications that inform policy decisions and enhance protections for migrant workers.

Through this program, UNAIR delivers critical insights to regional policy-makers on the socio-economic dynamics of migration, equipping them with the knowledge to enact supportive legislation and policy reforms. This initiative underscores UNAIR's commitment to supporting the welfare of Indonesian nationals abroad by working alongside government representatives and international partners.

Educational Support for Children of Migrant Workers

In collaboration with the World University Association for Community Development (WUACD), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and the Indonesian Consulate, UNAIR has also extended educational outreach to children of Indonesian migrant workers residing in Kim-Kim, Malaysia. These efforts include providing educational resources and support programs aimed at improving the quality of life and educational access for these children, ensuring they receive consistent schooling and developmental support.

This initiative offers policy-makers a tangible example of how education can serve as a stabilizing force for migrant communities, fostering a supportive environment that mitigates the social challenges associated with migration.

Shaping National Policy on Natural Resource Management

UNAIR has also contributed to national policy discourse, specifically through its involvement in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) on the Draft Bill for Natural Resource Management. Faculty of Law experts from UNAIR offered critical input, providing research-backed perspectives that help shape sustainable national policies on Indonesia’s natural resources. SDGs Center UNAIR mendelegasikan Dua Mahasiswa untuk mengikuti Student SDGs Conference 2023: “Mahasiswa Bersatu untuk Pencapaian Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan”

Surabaya, 10 Maret 2023 - Sebanyak 60 mahasiswa dari berbagai universitas di Indonesia, bersama para generasi muda dari beragam latar belakang, turut meriahkan acara Student SDGs Conference 2023 yang diselenggarakan oleh SDGs Center UMM pada 9 Maret 2023. Acara yang berlangsung selama 3 hari ini menjadi wadah bagi pemuda-pemudi berbakat untuk bersama-sama merancang solusi inovatif guna mencapai Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDGs) pada tahun 2030.

Hari pertama acara diisi dengan diskusi yang mengangkat isu-isu krusial terkait percepatan SDGs di tahun 2030. Dengan kehadiran Bapak Yanuar Nugroho, Ph.D., Koordinator Ahli SDGs Indonesia, dan Dr. Priyo Iswanto, M.H., Duta Besar Indonesia untuk Kolombia 2017-2021, forum tersebut menjadi arena berbagi ide dan pandangan tentang lingkungan serta dampak polusi. Peserta forum menunjukkan keberagaman pendapat dan gagasan, menjadi sumber inspirasi untuk langkah-langkah nyata dalam mencapai tujuan bersama.

Pada hari kedua, diskusi ekonomi berkelanjutan menjadi sorotan utama. Dipimpin oleh Komisaris Independen BSI, Drg. Arief Rosyid Hasan, M.KM., diskusi ini menghadirkan semangat luar biasa dari peserta yang berpartisipasi aktif. Acara kemudian dilanjutkan dengan Model United Nations, fokus pada isu lingkungan. Peserta dengan antusias berbagi ide inovatif dan berkolaborasi untuk menciptakan solusi bagi permasalahan global.

Bunga Anggreani dan Ilham, Duta Kampus SDGs Universitas Airlangga, berbicara tentang pengalaman luar biasa di konferensi ini. "Kegiatan ini tidak hanya sebatas diskusi, tetapi juga implementasi untuk dunia yang lebih baik. Dengan mengikuti Konferensi Student SDGs Center ini, kita tidak hanya memperoleh pengetahuan untuk mencari solusi, tetapi diharapkan kita bertindak nyata memberikan kontribusi positif bagi masyarakat. Let’s make a better world with no one left behind," dengan penuh semangat.

Acara ini menjadi momentum penting bagi para peserta untuk merajut kolaborasi lintas perguruan tinggi dan latar belakang, menggali potensi diri, dan berkomitmen untuk bertindak nyata demi tercapainya SDGs pada tahun 2030. Melalui diskusi, ide inovatif, dan semangat kolaboratif, mahasiswa dan generasi muda berkontribusi dalam menciptakan dunia yang lebih berkelanjutan dan inklusif untuk semua.
