7th Mangrove Festival: UNAIR Academic Community and Alumni Take Action to Advance SDGs in East Java

SDGs Center - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), in collaboration with the East Java Provincial Government, held a community engagement program entitled the 7th Mangrove Festival 2025. The event took place on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) at Tambak Bahak Beach, Curah Dringu Village, Tongas District, Probolinggo Regency. The Mangrove Festival has been organized annually since 2022, focusing on climate change mitigation and coastal ecosystem restoration. To date, the program has reached one city and five regencies in East Java. This year, Probolinggo was chosen as the host due to its strategic position in strengthening the coastal green belt in central East Java.

UNAIR was represented by faculty members and students from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Faculty of Vocational Studies, and UNAIR’s SDGs Center, supported by the Alumni Association (IKA UNAIR). They actively participated in planting thousands of mangrove seedlings, releasing waterbirds and crabs, and providing free healthcare services for coastal communities. This multi-stakeholder collaboration supports SDG achievements both at the university and provincial levels. For UNAIR, the initiative reinforces contributions to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). For East Java Province, it aligns with the Regional Action Plan (RAD) for SDGs, which prioritizes coastal conservation and improved livelihoods for local fishers.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni of UNAIR, Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We need to jointly address pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Mangroves play a critical role in determining the quality of coastal green belts. By engaging both the academic community and alumni, UNAIR is not only active in the academic sphere but also delivers real solutions for society,” he stated. He added that Probolinggo was chosen for its potential to disseminate best practices in mangrove restoration. “From this central point, we can replicate and expand the success model to other coastal regions across East Java,” he continued.

The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, underscored that planting mangroves can be seen as an oxygen charity. In addition to absorbing carbon and preventing coastal abrasion, mangrove ecosystems provide natural habitats for fish and crabs, which boost local fishers’ productivity. "With the existence of mangroves, fishers no longer need to go far out to sea to catch fish. This will improve coastal communities’ welfare and contribute to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) in East Java,” she explained.

UNAIR’s involvement in the 7th Mangrove Festival demonstrates the university’s strong commitment to advancing sustainability agendas, both at the campus and provincial levels. Through collaborative action involving academia, government, the private sector, and communities, this initiative strengthens East Java’s position as a proactive province in achieving the SDGs.

SDGs Center UNAIR – Direktorat Pendidikan Tinggi dan IPTEK (PTI) Bappenas mengadakan Focus Group Discussion (FGD) tematik dengan tema "Praktik Baik dan Strategi Peningkatan Peringkat Perguruan Tinggi di Indonesia dalam THE Impact Rankings" Ketua SDGs Center Universitas Airlangga, Bapak Bayu Arie Fianto, S.E., M.B.A., Ph.D., diundang sebagai narasumber utama dalam Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Acara yang bertema “Praktik Baik dan Strategi Peningkatan Peringkat Perguruan Tinggi di Indonesia dalam THE Impact Rankings” ini dilaksanakan pada Selasa, 27 Agustus 2024, bertempat di Menara Bappenas, Jakarta Selatan.

Acara yang berlangsung di Menara Bappenas, Jakarta Selatan, ini dihadiri oleh para pemangku kepentingan di bidang pendidikan tinggi, termasuk Ketua SDGs Center Universitas Airlangga, Bapak Bayu Arie Fianto, S.E., M.B.A., Ph.D. Kehadiran beliau sebagai salah satu narasumber utama diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan dan pandangan strategis terkait dengan peningkatan peringkat perguruan tinggi Indonesia di kancah internasional, khususnya dalam THE Impact Rankings.

FGD ini merupakan bagian dari upaya Bappenas dalam menyusun dokumen Rancangan RPJMN 2025-2029 Bidang Pendidikan Tinggi dan Peta Jalan Pendidikan. Dalam paparannya, Bapak Bayu Arie Fianto memfokuskan pada “Praktik Baik dan Strategi Peningkatan Peran Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dalam SDGs dan THE Impact Rankings.”

Dalam sambutannya, perwakilan dari Direktorat PTI Bappenas menyampaikan pentingnya kolaborasi antara pemerintah, akademisi, dan berbagai pemangku kepentingan lainnya dalam mewujudkan pendidikan tinggi yang berkualitas dan berdaya saing global. "Peningkatan peringkat perguruan tinggi Indonesia di tingkat internasional bukan hanya sekadar pencapaian simbolis, tetapi juga cerminan dari kualitas pendidikan yang kita tawarkan kepada dunia," ujarnya.

Bapak Bayu Arie Fianto berharap bahwa hasil dari FGD ini akan memberikan panduan yang jelas dalam pengembangan pendidikan tinggi di Indonesia, sehingga dapat memberikan kontribusi nyata dalam pencapaian tujuan pembangunan nasional, terutama dalam konteks SDGs.

Issues in the fields of economy, education, health, and gender have caused the development of human resource capacity in Indonesia to be uneven. Empowerment programs are needed to improve the economy evenly and overcome social problems. Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) are the issues that needs attention to provide access to a decent life for women and marginalized groups. One of the focuses of GEDSI’s activities is to empower women, marginalized groups and disabilities by increasing their skills and capacity in various sectors, especially the economic sector. This holistic approach aims at creating an environment that fosters gender equality, supporting SDG 5 and laying the foundation for a more inclusive academic landscape.

External Impact: Mentoring Program for Women: Breaking Barriers Beyond Campus Walls Externally, Universitas Airlangga collaborates to launch an innovative mentoring program aimed at women beyond the university setting. This program, contributing to SDG 5 and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), empowers women engaged in motorcycle taxi services by providing mentorship and support. Universitas Airlangga commitment to comprehensive women's empowerment garners global recognition, positioning Universitas Airlangga as a leader in sustainable development and gender equality.

UNAIR Strengthens Health Collaboration at Local, National, and Global Levels to Improve Public Well-being

SDGs News - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is making significant strides in enhancing health and well-being through strategic collaborations with health institutions at the local, national, and global levels. In a concerted effort to address pressing health issues, UNAIR partners with various organizations like UNICEF and WHO to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, combat stunting, and integrate essential healthcare services across communities.

Global Collaborations at the global level, UNAIR collaborates with the United Nations Joint Program to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). UNAIR plays an important role in integrating primary health care with HIV while supporting the “triple elimination” strategy aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B from mother to child.

Additionally, UNAIR has teamed up with Icon Cancer Centre Singapore, focusing on advancing cancer care through comprehensive initiatives in service, education, and research. This partnership brings together world-class expertise to enhance cancer treatment capabilities and provide patients with the highest standard of care.

National Efforts to Strengthen Health Systems Development of INAVAC Vaccine

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, UNAIR has made significant contributions through the development of the INAVAC vaccine. Collaborating with PT Biotis Pharmaceuticals Indonesia, UNAIR researchers developed this inactivated virus vaccine to combat COVID-19. The vaccine received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) on November 1, 2022, for use in individuals aged 18 years and above. Following the EUA, UNAIR commenced production of INAVAC, with an initial batch of 1.5 million doses. By January 2023, UNAIR had delivered 1.22 million doses to the Ministry of Health, ready for distribution across Indonesia. UNAIR's commitment to public health is further demonstrated by its initiative to provide free INAVAC vaccinations to the public.

On August 17, 2023, coinciding with Indonesia's Independence Day, UNAIR offered free INAVAC vaccinations to the community, marking the first public administration of the vaccine. Through these collaborative efforts and innovations like the INAVAC vaccine, Universitas Airlangga continues to make impactful contributions to health and well-being at multiple levels, positioning itself as a leader in healthcare education and community health enhancement.

Local Initiatives in East Java:

UNAIR’s local collaborations focus on improving public health education and healthcare accessibility within East Java. Partnering closely with the East Java Provincial Health Office, UNAIR promotes public health education on maintaining clean and healthy lifestyles. This initiative is essential in addressing the high rates of maternal and infant mortality in the region and in combating a 19.2% stunting prevalence, a critical issue affecting children’s growth and development. Together, they work on initiatives to curb tuberculosis and other non-communicable diseases, aiming to enhance the resilience of health systems across the province. These collaborations underscore UNAIR’s dedication to addressing complex health issues on a broader scale, helping to raise the standard of healthcare across East Java and benefiting communities in need.

Besides, through the Faculty of Medicine, UNAIR also continues to drive impactful health and well-being improvements by forging collaborations across local, national, and global health institutions. These partnerships aim to advance health services, enhance community health education, and contribute to groundbreaking research to address critical health challenges. One of UNAIR’s standout initiatives at the local level is its “1 Puskesmas 1 Obgyn” program, developed in collaboration with the Surabaya City Government. This initiative assigns an obstetrician-gynecologist (Obgyn) to each inpatient community health center (Puskesmas) in Surabaya, ensuring high-quality, accessible maternal care. The program strengthens front-line maternal services and addresses high maternal mortality rates by providing mentorship, case support, and referral expertise.

Through this strategic and sustainable collaboration, Universitas Airlangga is further strengthening its position as an institution dedicated to advancing public health at the local, national, and global levels, with a focus on achieving better welfare and quality of life for all
