In alignment with its commitment to promoting the sustainable use of marine resources, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has organized multiple community events focused on ocean and marine conservation. These initiatives reflect UNAIR’s dedication to SDG 14, Life Below Water, through practical action and community engagement, fostering environmental stewardship among students, local communities, and regional partners.

Coral Reef Restoration at Tiga Warna Beach

One of UNAIR’s key initiatives in marine conservation took place at Tiga Warna Beach in Malang, where students from the Faculty of Medicine spearheaded a coral reef restoration project. The event aimed to address declining coral biodiversity caused by environmental stress and human activities. By planting new coral reefs, UNAIR students are not only restoring vital marine habitats but also educating participants on the importance of coral ecosystems in maintaining ocean health and supporting marine biodiversity.

Mangrove Planting and Coastal Protection

In collaboration with the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline and Science and Technology Faculty, UNAIR and two Malaysian universities to conduct a mangrove planting and seedling project in Gununganyar village. This program was strategically aimed at protecting coastal areas from erosion, improving water quality, and enhancing carbon sequestration, thereby mitigating climate change impacts on marine ecosystems. Mangroves play a critical role in maintaining coastal water quality, providing nursery habitats for fish, and acting as natural barriers against storms and rising sea levels.

Through these hands-on conservation efforts, UNAIR not only contributes to the restoration of critical ecosystems but also raises awareness of sustainable marine practices among local residents and student participants. These community-oriented projects enable local stakeholders to understand the value of marine resources and actively participate in their preservation.

UNAIR’s collaborative approach, engaging both academic and local communities in conserving oceans and coastal areas, underlines its commitment to sustainable development and positions the university as a regional leader in environmental advocacy and education.
