Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has established an advanced and robust system to prevent water pollution and ensure environmental protection on its campuses. Through state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facilities known as Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). UNAIR effectively treats and reuses water while safeguarding against potential pollution, even during accidents or environmental accidents.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment with STP

The STP systems at UNAIR, located at both Campus A and Campus B, employ cutting-edge technology to treat various types of wastewater generated on-site. These systems follow a multi-step process designed to purify water before it reenters the environment or is reused. The treatment process includes:

a. Initial filtration to remove large particles and debris

b. Biological treatment to break down organic matter

c. Chemical treatment to neutralize hazardous substances

d. Final filtration and disinfection to ensure water is safe for reuse

Once treated, the water is recycled for non-potable purposes such as flushing toilets and irrigating plants across the campus. This approach not only conserves water but also ensures that no harmful substances enter natural water systems.

Measuring to Prevent Accidental Pollution

UNAIR goes beyond routine wastewater management by implementing a series of preventive measures to avoid pollution caused by accidents or incidents. UNAIR has installed real-time monitoring sensors across its STP infrastructure, enabling immediate detection of irregularities in water quality or treatment processes.

If there’s unexpected contamination or an accidental spill, an emergency spill containment system is activated. This system swiftly isolates and contains the pollutants, preventing them from entering the main water supply or surrounding environment. Each STP unit is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature, designed to halt operations in case of emergencies to minimize the risk of contamination.

Dedicated HSE Officers and Continous Safety Audits

UNAIR also assigns dedicated Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) officers at each treatment unit to oversee the strict implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for liquid waste management. These officers ensure that wastewater is collected, stored, treated, and disposed of following stringent environmental guidelines.

To maintain high safety standards, UNAIR conducts regular safety audits and testing of its wastewater management systems. These audits help to identify potential risks and areas for improvement, allowing the university to continually upgrade its processes and remain proactive in preventing pollution.

These processes underscore UNAIR’s commitment to environmental sustainability and public safety, ensuring that the university not only treats wastewater responsibly but i also well-prepared to handle any incident that could pose a threat to the environment. With its advanced systems, preventive measures, and continuous oversight, UNAIR demonstrates a leading approach to preventing water pollution, contributing to a cleaner and safer campus environment while promoting sustainable practices in line with its commitment to the SDGs.
