Universitas Airlangga - The problem of stunting in children has received great attention in Indonesia in recent years. Alarming statistics in 2013 revealed a stunting prevalence of 37.8 percent in children under five in this country. Inspired by this urgent concern, Farissa Riski Rahmadona, a student at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Airlangga University (FST UNAIR), developed a breakthrough mobile application that aims to detect stunting in children. The application entitled "Experts Detecting Stunting Systems in Children Using the Certainty Factor Method: Web-Based Application" is known for its innovative approach.

Farissa's app operates as an expert system, with pediatricians serving as the experts behind the app. This unique approach allows users to quickly and accurately determine the presence of stunting in children.

She explained, “I created an innovative system whose expert is a pediatrician. Leveraging their expertise, I designed a set of rules to identify stunting in children. As a result, system users can assess stunting conditions efficiently and precisely in children.”

During application development, Farissa collaborated with posyandu (integrated health service post for mothers and children) in Bontang City to collect important data. Pediatricians from Wahab Sjahranie Bontang Hospital play an important role in this collaboration. Bontang City was chosen because of the high prevalence of stunting.

Despite facing challenges arising from her non-medical background, Farissa persevered, stating, "These difficulties stemmed from my lack of medical expertise, as I had to familiarize myself with the terminology related to child nutrition issues."

In the future, Farissa envisions that further development of this application can increase its accuracy and usefulness in detecting stunting in children quickly and precisely. She emphasized the importance of early detection, because late recognition of stunting can have a negative impact on children's development

Farissa's dedication and innovative approach earned her a silver award at the International Exhibition of Creative and Humanizing Research, Ideas & Innovation (namely – RIICH'19) held at the Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus (KSAJS), Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) in Malaysia. Its achievements highlight the global significance and potential impact of its application in addressing the important problem of stunting in children.
