Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is making significant strides in supporting local government efforts for early warning and monitoring of climate-related disasters, underscoring its commitment to community safety and resilience. Through collaborative programs with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and local disaster management agencies, UNAIR is fostering awareness and preparedness for climate change risks across multiple regions.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is making significant strides in supporting local government efforts for early warning and monitoring of climate-related disasters, underscoring its commitment to community safety and resilience. Through collaborative programs with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and local disaster management agencies, UNAIR is fostering awareness and preparedness for climate change risks across multiple regions.

Community-Driven Disaster Risk Management in Banyuwangi

In Banyuwangi, UNAIR’s Faculty of Public Health and School of Health and Natural Sciences collaborated with the Regional Disaster Management Agency to implement a disaster risk management framework specifically tailored to the unique geographical and climate challenges faced by the region. This initiative emphasized proactive community preparedness, equipping local residents with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond effectively to various climate-related hazards. Through this partnership, community members learned essential skills for handling natural disasters, strengthening Banyuwangi’s resilience in the face of multi-hazard risks.

Building Early Warning Systems in Ponorogo

Further extending its climate disaster response initiatives, UNAIR supported the Regional Disaster Management Agency in Ponorogo by establishing a dedicated early warning system. This initiative included the formation of community-based disaster response groups, trained in diverse aspects of climate disaster response, from risk assessment to basic needs provision during emergencies. The program’s training sessions empowered participants to be first responders in their communities, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of the early warning systems and ensuring rapid mobilization in the event of a climate-related disaster.

Through these partnerships and community-centric programs, Universitas Airlangga continues to strengthen its role as a key player in regional climate resilience efforts. By integrating education, practical training, and collaborative research, UNAIR not only informs government strategy but actively builds resilient communities capable of responding to the ever-growing challenges posed by climate change.
