Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is at the forefront of advancing sustainable practices within the marine industry, with a focus on minimizing environmental impact and safeguarding aquatic ecosystems. Through direct collaboration with industry partners and innovative research, UNAIR actively develops and deploys technologies to address challenges such as pollution, habitat degradation, and overfishing.

IoT-Based Pond Monitoring for Sustainable Agriculture

To ensure responsible fish farming, UNAIR’s Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline use of IoT-based automated systems in Pasuruan, East Java. This technology allows aquaculture operators to continuously monitor and adjust water quality conditions in real time. By maintaining optimal pond conditions, the system significantly reduces the likelihood of ecological harm and improves fish health, thereby reducing the need for antibiotics and pollutants commonly associated with conventional aquaculture practices.

Research on Eco-Friendly Fish Feed for Pollution Reduction

UNAIR’s Faculty of Fisheries is conducting innovative research on eco-friendly fish feed, designed to minimize waste by-products in aquaculture environments. This sustainable feed solution reduces nutrient runoff that can lead to harmful algal blooms, ensuring cleaner and healthier aquatic ecosystems. These practices align with UNAIR’s commitment to sustainable food production and a lower carbon footprint within the aquaculture industry.

Strengthening Legal Frameworks with MAROCLAW

Through the Maritime Ocean Law Studies (MAROCLAW+) initiative, UNAIR collaborates with marine industry stakeholders to establish stricter waste management protocols and promote responsible fishing. The partnership focuses on enforcing compliance with marine conservation laws, reducing unregulated fishing, and mitigating pollution from industrial waste. This legal framework ensures that both marine resources and local fisheries are protected, contributing to long-term ecosystem sustainability.

Habitat Restoration: Mangrove and Seagrass Protection
