UNAIR Strengthens Health Collaboration at Local, National, and Global Levels to Improve Public Well-being

SDGs News - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is making significant strides in enhancing health and well-being through strategic collaborations with health institutions at the local, national, and global levels. In a concerted effort to address pressing health issues, UNAIR partners with various organizations like UNICEF and WHO to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, combat stunting, and integrate essential healthcare services across communities.

Global Collaborations at the global level, UNAIR collaborates with the United Nations Joint Program to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). UNAIR plays an important role in integrating primary health care with HIV while supporting the “triple elimination” strategy aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B from mother to child.

Additionally, UNAIR has teamed up with Icon Cancer Centre Singapore, focusing on advancing cancer care through comprehensive initiatives in service, education, and research. This partnership brings together world-class expertise to enhance cancer treatment capabilities and provide patients with the highest standard of care.

National Efforts to Strengthen Health Systems Development of INAVAC Vaccine

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, UNAIR has made significant contributions through the development of the INAVAC vaccine. Collaborating with PT Biotis Pharmaceuticals Indonesia, UNAIR researchers developed this inactivated virus vaccine to combat COVID-19. The vaccine received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) on November 1, 2022, for use in individuals aged 18 years and above. Following the EUA, UNAIR commenced production of INAVAC, with an initial batch of 1.5 million doses. By January 2023, UNAIR had delivered 1.22 million doses to the Ministry of Health, ready for distribution across Indonesia. UNAIR's commitment to public health is further demonstrated by its initiative to provide free INAVAC vaccinations to the public.

On August 17, 2023, coinciding with Indonesia's Independence Day, UNAIR offered free INAVAC vaccinations to the community, marking the first public administration of the vaccine. Through these collaborative efforts and innovations like the INAVAC vaccine, Universitas Airlangga continues to make impactful contributions to health and well-being at multiple levels, positioning itself as a leader in healthcare education and community health enhancement.

Local Initiatives in East Java:

UNAIR’s local collaborations focus on improving public health education and healthcare accessibility within East Java. Partnering closely with the East Java Provincial Health Office, UNAIR promotes public health education on maintaining clean and healthy lifestyles. This initiative is essential in addressing the high rates of maternal and infant mortality in the region and in combating a 19.2% stunting prevalence, a critical issue affecting children’s growth and development. Together, they work on initiatives to curb tuberculosis and other non-communicable diseases, aiming to enhance the resilience of health systems across the province. These collaborations underscore UNAIR’s dedication to addressing complex health issues on a broader scale, helping to raise the standard of healthcare across East Java and benefiting communities in need.

Besides, through the Faculty of Medicine, UNAIR also continues to drive impactful health and well-being improvements by forging collaborations across local, national, and global health institutions. These partnerships aim to advance health services, enhance community health education, and contribute to groundbreaking research to address critical health challenges. One of UNAIR’s standout initiatives at the local level is its “1 Puskesmas 1 Obgyn” program, developed in collaboration with the Surabaya City Government. This initiative assigns an obstetrician-gynecologist (Obgyn) to each inpatient community health center (Puskesmas) in Surabaya, ensuring high-quality, accessible maternal care. The program strengthens front-line maternal services and addresses high maternal mortality rates by providing mentorship, case support, and referral expertise.

Through this strategic and sustainable collaboration, Universitas Airlangga is further strengthening its position as an institution dedicated to advancing public health at the local, national, and global levels, with a focus on achieving better welfare and quality of life for all

Universitas Airlangga Expands Public Access to Knowledge and Learning

SDGs UNAIR – In a significant step towards fostering lifelong learning and community engagement, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has enhanced its public educational offerings, allowing greater access to knowledge for a broad range of community members. Through initiatives such as public library access, open lectures, and online courses, UNAIR is making strides toward building a well-informed, empowered society.

The UNAIR Library serves as a hub of knowledge for students and the general public alike. For those eager to explore a wide array of academic resources, the library offers open access to on-site reading, while an affordable membership fee provides additional privileges, including borrowing rights. This initiative allows local residents, researchers, and students from other institutions to benefit from UNAIR’s extensive collections, covering disciplines from the humanities to the sciences. Expanding Library Access: Over 5,000 Community Members Served At the heart of UNAIR’s educational outreach is its central library, which has welcomed over 5,000 community members in the past year alone. Community members benefit from open access for on-site reading, while a nominal membership fee allows for borrowing privileges. This service provides a valuable academic resource for local students, researchers, and citizens interested in expanding their knowledge across disciplines.

Engaging the Public through Open Lectures and Webinars UNAIR regularly hosts open lectures and webinars on a variety of topics, freely available to the public. These events provide unique opportunities to hear from leading experts and policymakers on pressing issues. Recently, UNAIR hosted a lecture titled “Opportunities and Challenges of Dignified Democracy Towards Indonesia Gold 2045,” featuring Indonesia’s Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. Such events not only educate but also stimulate public discourse on national and global challenges. Prof. Nurul Amalia, Head of Community Engagement at UNAIR, highlighted the significance of these events, saying, “Open lectures and webinars allow us to connect directly with the community, encouraging thoughtful discussion on issues that affect us all.”

Online Learning for All: UNAIR’s MOOC Platform UNAIR has also embraced digital learning through its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform. Designed to reach a broad audience, these courses are accessible online, with many offered for free. Specialized courses, however, may require a fee due to their unique content and expert involvement. The MOOC platform enables both local and international learners to access UNAIR’s academic expertise from anywhere in the world, making it a valuable resource for skill development and personal growth.

Online Learning for All: Over 10,000 Learners on UNAIR’s MOOC Platform UNAIR’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform is making quality education more accessible, with over 10,000 learners from Indonesia and abroad enrolling in 2023. With courses in public health, business, and environmental science, UNAIR’s MOOCs provide free and low-cost options to reach a wide audience. Specialized courses are available at a fee, with revenue directed back into platform development and free content creation.

Ensuring Digital Access with Computer Facilities and Internet Hubs On campus, UNAIR provides computer and internet facilities, which have served over 1,200 community members in 2023 alone. While primarily aimed at students, designated areas offer external visitors access to essential digital resources. UNAIR’s initiative has been instrumental for individuals without internet access at home, making educational resources and digital literacy more accessible.

Partnerships to Broaden Reach and Serve Marginalized Communities UNAIR collaborates with local organizations, such as the Surabaya Literacy Foundation, to further its educational reach, particularly among marginalized groups. Together, they organize workshops and informational sessions to promote access to UNAIR’s resources. Additionally, UNAIR works with regional government agencies to extend free access to online courses for underrepresented groups, including youth in rural areas and low-income communities, providing vouchers and community-hosted access points.
