Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is committed to upholding high standards of water quality to protect ecosystems, wildlife, and public health. In alignment with Indonesia’s Government Regulation No. 22/2021 and Ministerial Regulation No. P.68/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/8/2016, UNAIR has established internal guidelines under Rector’s Decrees No. 2094/UN3/2016 and No. 1050/UN3/2021. These policies focus on sustainable water use, water conservation, strict quality standards, and effective recycling and filtration processes. They also emphasize the reduced use of deep wells, efficient tap systems, and ongoing water quality management.

Advanced Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for Sustainable Water Management

To ensure all water discharge meets national and institutional standards, UNAIR operates a sophisticated Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that processes wastewater through six critical stages:

Collection

Wastewater from various facilities is collected and directed to the treatment plant.

Pre-Treatment

Solids and larger particles are removed to prevent system clogs and ensure effective treatment.

Bio-Treatment

Beneficial microorganisms break down organic matter, reducing harmful pollutants.

Sedimentation

The treated water undergoes sedimentation to separate residual solids.

Filtration

Fine particles are filtered out, ensuring high water purity.

Disinfection

Final disinfection neutralizes any remaining pathogens, making the water safe for reuse.

Treated water is repurposed for irrigation, flushing, and other non-potable uses on campus, minimizing the environmental impact of water discharge. This comprehensive treatment process protects surrounding ecosystems, including aquatic habitats, by ensuring water is free from harmful pollutants before it reenters the environment.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement and Community Impact

UNAIR’s approach goes beyond regulatory compliance; the university is focused on continuous improvement in sustainable water management. Future goals include expanding water recycling capacity, further minimizing reliance on groundwater, and improving water use efficiency across all campus facilities.

Additionally, UNAIR actively engages with local communities through workshops and awareness programs on water conservation and ecosystem protection, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability beyond the university grounds. These initiatives aim to inspire and educate the public on the importance of maintaining water quality for the well-being of both people and natural ecosystems.
