Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has embarked on a landmark partnership to address water security challenges facing one of Indonesia's critical water resources, the Brantas River. In collaboration with five Indonesian universities and global partners form LDE Consortium — including Leiden University, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), and Erasmus University — this initiative, called the Indonesia-Netherland, aims to create a sustainable, multidisciplinary management plan for the Brantas River. 

A Collective Effort to East Java's Lifeline

The Brantas River, a crucial source of water for millions in East Java, has faced significant pollution and environmental degradation due to industrial and domestic waste. UNAIR and its partners are set to launch the Brantas River project, introducing both technological solutions and community focused strategies to tackle the river's water quality crisis.

Educational Initiatives to Combat Pollution at the Source

Beyond the technical measures, UNAIR is leading efforts to involve the community in water security practices. An essential part  of the program focuses on educating local households, particularly housewives, about effective waste management to reduce domestic waste pollution in the river. By promoting awareness at the household level, UNAIR and its partners aim to address pollution at its source, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.

Seminar on Water Quality in Collaboration with Global Experts

Seminar with Global Experts

In preparation for the Brantas River project, UNAIR's Faculty of Science and Technology recently hosted a seminar focused on the water quality issues affecting the Brantas River. The seminar, organized in partnership with TU Delft, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), TAUW environmental consultancy, and local environmental NGO Ecoton, convened experts to discuss innovative approaches to water quality monitoring and community management. Attendees explored cutting-edge water monitoring technology and its role in assessing and enhancing river health.

In show of support, the Governor of East Java endorsed the project's goal to improve the Brantas River's water quality, acknowledging it as a crucial initiative for regional water security.

Brantas River of Life: A Vision for Collective Action

UNAIR and the Indonesia-Netherlands Consortium envision the Brantas River of Life project as a model of collaborative, interdisciplinary action to address water security challenges in Indonesia. With a comprehensive plan that combines water management technologies, educational outreach, and environmental conservation, this initiatives represents a significant step toward sustainable resource management.

By fostering collaboration between Indonesia and Dutch experts, UNAIR underscores its role as a leader in environmental sustainability, addressing both local and global water security challenges.
