SDGs Center UNAIR - The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) estimated the total food waste in Indonesia to reach 20.9 million in 2021. This amount is decreasing from the previous year, which reached 23 million to 48 million metric tonnes from 2000 to 2019. The high amount of food waste in Indonesia causes multiple problems. In addition, it is the opposite of the situation in Indonesia, where poverty has become an important issue today. Also, hunger has been an unsolved problem for many years.

As a result, Universitas Airlangga is committed to continuing and supporting the zero-waste movement by monitoring the amount of waste produced by the university during each period. It was recorded that in 2021, Universitas Airlangga produced 56.8 metric tonnes of food waste with a total campus population of around 40 thousand people. This amount is down from food waste in 2019, which reached 143 tons.

The amount of food waste produced by Universitas Airlangga is expected to continue to decline every year to achieve the goal of SDG 2, "zero hunger." The university, by continuing to reduce food waste, hoped that the food needs of the entire campus population would be fulfilled and that the contribution of waste in Indonesia would be reduced, resulting in equal wellbeing for the entire society.
