UNAIR Empowers Communities Through ASIK Competition: Road to SDGs Festival 2025

SDGs NEWS, 17–18 October 2025 — As part of the Road to SDGs Festival 2025, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), organized a two-day workshop and training program to prepare participants for the upcoming Airlangga Sustainable and Impactful Kampung (ASIK) Competition. The event took place at the Jambangan Sub-district Office, Surabaya, and was attended by representatives from six sub-districts (kelurahan) and twelve neighborhood associations (Rukun Warga/RW).

Hands-On Training for Circular Economy and Climate Action

The workshop focused on practical techniques for managing household waste and advancing circular-economy practices at the community level. Participants learned how to transform organic waste into compost and eco-enzymes, convert used cooking oil into detergent soap and aromatic candles, and develop environmentally friendly products with market value. These innovations directly support Indonesia’s Kampung Iklim program, which promotes climate resilience and sustainable community participation. All six participating sub-districts have already achieved Kampung Madya status, reflecting their consistent commitment to environmental action. The training was therefore designed to refine their initiatives and enhance the quality of their proposals in preparation for the ASIK Competition.

UNAIR’s Commitment to Sustainable Community Empowerment

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, Dr. Nurina Fitriani who delivered a welcome address and outlined the goals of the ASIK Competition. In her remarks, she explained that the competition aims to strengthen collaboration between universities and communities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level. She also shared key insights on integrating SDG values—such as environmental care, responsible production, and social inclusion—into community development initiatives. Facilitators from UNAIR’s SDGs experts and partner organizations provided additional guidance on project mapping, proposal development, and impact evaluation, ensuring that local innovations align with sustainable practices.

Turning Kampungs into Sustainable Models

The judging phase of the ASIK Competition will take place from 29 to 31 October 2025, where selected community representatives will present their projects to a panel of judges from UNAIR and partner institutions. The competition is UNAIR’s dedication to advancing SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through inclusive and community-based innovation. By connecting academic knowledge with local empowerment, Universitas Airlangga continues to help transform Surabaya’s kampungs into models of sustainability—where waste becomes value, collaboration inspires innovation, and local action contributes to global progress toward a greener future.

Mahasiswa UNAIR Latih Warga Jatijejer Buat Alat Peraga Edukatif dari Barang Bekas, Dorong Edukasi Anak Usia Dini dan Pengelolaan Sampah

Menurut data Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset, dan Teknologi (Kemendikbudristek), masa usia dini merupakan periode emas tumbuh kembang anak yang menentukan kesiapan belajar saat memasuki jenjang sekolah. Namun, tidak semua anak memiliki akses terhadap stimulasi yang cukup karena keterbatasan alat bantu belajar dan pola asuh. Di sisi lain, limbah rumah tangga terus meningkat, namun belum dimanfaatkan secara kreatif oleh masyarakat.

Kesadaran akan pentingnya stimulasi dini bagi anak-anak dan pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga menjadi fokus utama kegiatan pelatihan yang diinisiasi oleh Mahasiswa KKN BBK 6 Universitas Airlangga di Desa Jatijejer. Bertempat di Balai Desa Jatijejer pada Jumat, 18 Juli 2025, kegiatan bertajuk Pembuatan Alat Peraga Edukatif dari Barang Bekas (ECO-APE) ini menyasar para orang tua siswa Kelompok Bermain dan TK Mardi Siwi.

Pelatihan dilaksanakan secara interaktif dan aplikatif melalui serangkaian sesi yang dimulai dari pengenalan konsep ECO-APE, yaitu alat peraga edukatif ramah lingkungan yang dapat dibuat dari barang-barang bekas rumah tangga tanpa biaya. Pengenalan ini disampaikan langsung oleh Anindra Habibi, Duta Lingkungan Indonesia sekaligus inovator ECO-APE yang juga merupakan mahasiswa peserta KKN.

Kegiatan berlanjut dengan praktik langsung pembuatan alat peraga berupa papan bilangan boneka salju dan papan bilangan es krim yang mudah dibuat dan digunakan di rumah. Melalui pelatihan ini, peserta tidak hanya diajak untuk kreatif memanfaatkan sampah rumah tangga, tetapi juga diberi pemahaman mendalam mengenai pentingnya mendampingi tumbuh kembang anak di usia emas.

SDGs Center UNAIR - Kegiatan ini turut mendukung pencapaian SDGs nomor 4 tentang Pendidikan Berkualitas (Quality Education) melalui penyediaan sarana stimulasi dini sebagai persiapan anak memasuki usia sekolah. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga menyasar SDGs nomor 12 tentang Konsumsi dan Produksi yang Bertanggung Jawab (Responsible Consumption and Production) dengan mendorong pemanfaatan barang bekas atau limbah rumah tangga menjadi alat edukatif yang bermanfaat.

Salah satu peserta, Ibu Lilis, menyampaikan antusiasmenya terhadap kegiatan ini. “Kegiatan ini sangat membantu, karena biasanya kami para orang tua kebingungan bagaimana menstimulasi anak-anak di tengah maraknya penggunaan gadget. Sekarang, kami bisa membuat alat peraga sendiri di rumah dengan bahan bekas yang murah bahkan tanpa biaya,” tuturnya.

Hasil dari pelatihan ini akan digunakan sebagai inventaris pembelajaran di KB-TK Mardi Siwi, sekaligus menjadi langkah awal bagi masyarakat untuk menerapkan prinsip daur ulang yang edukatif dan berkelanjutan di lingkungan sekitar mereka.

SDGs Ambassador UNAIR 2023 Hansel Alexander, Sampaikan Materi Daring tentang SDG 6 dan SDG 12 pada AIESEC IN UNHAS

SDGs Centre UNAIR - Hansel Alexander, Mahasiswa Farmasi Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dan SDGs Ambassador UNAIR terpilih tahun 2023, memberikan materi secara daring tentang SDG 6 dan SDG 12 dalam acara "Exploring SDG 6 & SDG 12" yang diselenggarakan oleh AIESEC IN UNHAS. Acara ini diikuti oleh 60 peserta yang antusias untuk memperdalam pemahaman mereka tentang tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan (SDGs).

Melalui platform online ZOOM MEETING, Hansel memulai dengan pengenalan umum tentang SDGs, menjelaskan pentingnya tujuan-tujuan ini bagi pembangunan global yang berkelanjutan. Ia kemudian memberikan penjelasan rinci tentang SDG 6, yang berfokus pada akses air bersih dan sanitasi, serta SDG 12 yang menekankan pada konsumsi dan produksi yang bertanggung jawab.

"Ketersediaan air bersih dan sanitasi yang layak masih menjadi tantangan besar, terutama di wilayah-wilayah terpencil. Konsumsi dan produksi yang bertanggung jawab sangat penting untuk menjaga keberlanjutan sumber daya alam kita," jelas Hansel kepada para peserta.

Hansel juga menyoroti isu-isu lokal terkait SDGs 6 dan 12 di Sulawesi Selatan, seperti masih minimnya akses air bersih di beberapa daerah dan masalah pengelolaan limbah. Ia menekankan bahwa isu-isu ini memerlukan perhatian dan tindakan segera, mengingat komplikasi dan urgensi yang ada.

"Peran kita semua sangat penting dalam mengatasi tantangan ini. Setiap langkah kecil yang kita ambil bisa membawa perubahan besar," ujarnya, mengajak peserta untuk aktif berpartisipasi dalam mencapai tujuan-tujuan ini.

Mengakhiri sesi, Hansel memberikan call to action kepada peserta, mendorong mereka untuk mulai bertindak dari hal-hal kecil di lingkungan sekitar mereka demi masa depan yang lebih baik.

Mengenal Lebih Dekat: Implementasi SDG 12

Surabaya, 25 Maret 2024 - Di tengah semakin meningkatnya kesadaran akan pentingnya keberlanjutan, Indonesia terus mengambil langkah-langkah yang progresif dalam mendukung pencapaian Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12, yaitu "Konsumsi dan Produksi yang Bertanggung Jawab". SDG 12 memilki tujuan untuk memastikan pola konsumsi dan produksi yang berkelanjutan secara global, dengan fokus pada efisiensi sumber daya, pengurangan limbah, dan promosi praktik-produksi yang ramah lingkungan.

Dalam mencapai SDG 12, dibutuhkan berbagai pihak. Pemerintah Indonesia sendiri memiliki target dalam pengurangan sampah hingga 2025. Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK) menyatakan bahwa Indonesia memiliki Target Indonesia Bersih Sampah 2025 melalui pengurangan sampah sebesar 30% dan penanganan sampah sebesar 70%. Target ini bisa dicapai apabila saling berkomitmen dan berkolaborasi serta melakukan aksi dari berbagai pihak, baik dari pemerintah, swasta, pelaku bisnis dan industri, serta masyarakat.

Untuk mencapai target ini, Indonesia pernah menyelenggarakan Kampanye "Indonesia Bebas Sampah 2020" dimana inisiatif ini bertujuan untuk mengurangi jumlah plastik di Indonesia serta mempromosikan praktik-praktik pengelolaan sampah yang lebih bertanggung jawab. Kampanye ini diluncurkan dengan harapan dapat menghasilkan perubahan besar dalam sikap dan perilaku masyarakat terkait dengan penggunaan plastik sekali pakai dan pemilahan sampah.

Mencapai SDG 12 bukan hanya tanggung jawab pemerintah saja, melainkan berbagai pihak termasuk universitas. Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) telah menyelenggarakan berbagai program pendidikan dan penelitian yang berfokus pada praktik-produksi dan konsumsi yang berkelanjutan. Salah satu contoh nyata dari implementasi SDG 12 yang dilakukan oleh UNAIR yaitu dengan mendirikan Rumah Kompos UNAIR sebagai bagian dari upaya untuk mengurangi limbah dan mendukung siklus ekonomi berkelanjutan.

Rumah kompos ini bertujuan untuk mengubah sampah organik menjadi kompos yang bermanfaat untuk pemupukan tanaman di lingkungan kampus. Tidak hanya menjadi sarana untuk mengurangi jumlah sampah yang masuk ke tempat pembuangan akhir, tetapi juga membantu menciptakan lingkungan universitas yang lebih hijau dan berkelanjutan. Selain itu, Rumah Kompos UNAIR juga dirancang untuk mendorong partisipasi mahasiswa dalam memajukan karya inovatif terkait pengelolaan sampah. Mahasiswa tidak hanya dapat berkontribusi dalam operasional sehari-hari, namun juga didorong untuk melakukan penelitian dan kajian terkait inovasi pengelolaan sampah organik. Hal ini diharapkan dapat menghasilkan solusi-solusi baru dan lebih efisien dalam pengelolaan sampah sampah baik di lingkungan kampus maupun luar kampus.

Dengan adanya langkah-langkah konkret ini, maka menunjukkan komitmen, baik dari pemerintah universitas, maupun masyarakat, untuk mempercepat kemajuan dalam mencapai SDG 12 dan mewujudkan konsumsi dan produksi yang lebih bertanggung jawab demi kesejahteraan lingkungan dan masyarakat.

Golden Waste Bank: A Step Towards A BEM FISIP initiative

The Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Airlangga (BEM FISIP UNAIR) 2022 helped to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by holding a Golden Waste Bank Socialization (Campus Action 2022), which has a concept as an activity to introduce and promote waste management to FISIP communities. On this occasion, BEM FISIP also introduced their new initiative in the form of a waste bank. BEM FISIP also provides information on how to deposit waste into their bank. Specifically, they provide guidance on how to sort waste that is suitable for recycling. This activity helps preserve and protect the environment, and is a step forward towards the real implementation of a green campus.

This activity was carried out through the Zoom Clouds Meeting, which was held on Friday, May 27, 2022, at 09.00 – 10.45 WIB. The representative from the Sustainable Development Goals Center (SDGs) Universitas Airlangga, Mrs. Savira Rizma Yunita S.M., as an official body that supports the achievement of SDGs goals, especially the 12th SDGs, namely Responsible Consumption and Production, and the 13th SDGs, namely Climate Action, SDG 12 focuses on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. SDG 13 focuses on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Mrs. Savira Rizma Yunita S.M said that she really supports the implementation of the Gold Waste Bank Socialization program (Campus Action 2022) by BEM FISIP UNAIR 2022. She also appreciates the implementation of the program because BEM FISIP UNAIR has become one of the Universitas Airlangga organizations that has made a real contribution to society. The role of students as agents of change is reflected in this activity, namely during the delivery of insights, and this activity also raises awareness of the academic community and the surrounding community regarding the importance of processing waste through the provision of a waste bank, as well as the benefits of the existence of the waste bank.

She gave a message to students so that they could absorb the knowledge that had been conveyed by the presenters and could apply their knowledge at Universitas Airlangga, especially in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. She provided information that Universitas Airlangga in 2022 had scored achievements in the THE Impact Ranking, namely being ranked in the top 200 in the world and ranked 5 in Indonesia. There are four best SDGs owned by Universitas Airlangga, namely SDGs 1: No Poverty, SDGs 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDGs 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDGs 17: Partnerships for the Goals. She supported the initiative and looked forward to seeing the progress in the near future.

Waste Tracking and How to manage it in Universitas Airlangga

SDGs Center UNAIR - As a form of the University's commitment to reducing the waste problem. Universitas Airlangga measures the amount of waste generated in the university environment. Around 600kg of garbage is collected per day. The waste is a combination of organic and inorganic waste. If it is accumulated annually, Universitas Airlangga produces 144 tons of waste. Around 72 tons of waste is inorganic waste which disposed on landfill. While the rest, which is organic waste, will be recycled.

In order to process organic waste, Universitas Airlangga built a compost house in 2018. The recycled waste in this compost house is organic waste. The majority of this organic waste is leaf waste. Airlangga University annually recycles 28.8 tons of leaf waste. Leaf waste that has been recycled will later become compost, which is used for fertilizing plants in the university environment.

Creating a clean environment, Universitas Airlangga Treats Waste in the University Environment.

The total amount of waste produced by Indonesia in 2020, reach 29 million tons. Of this total amount of waste, the average amount of household waste produced by Indonesia in 2021 was large, reaching 42.33%. This data has been reduced after previously in 2020, the total waste in Indonesia reached 67.8 million tons. The government's efforts to reduce the amount of waste include the establishment of a waste bank, the development of composting, waste sorting, 3R TPS, and converting waste into energy sources. Household waste is not only produced by the home but also by universities.

In order to overcome this and also to meet the SDG 12 target, namely sustainable consumption and production, Universitas Airlangga is trying to reduce household waste generated by managing their waste. Through the SOP for waste management, Universitas Airlangga emphasizes several things, such as: campus cleanliness is the responsibility of the entire academic community; the entire academic community must dispose of waste in the provided place; waste must be sorted according to type; officers collect and transport waste regularly according to the daily schedule and regulate the process; and composting according to the volume of waste generated.

Universitas Airlangga itself produces 400 kg of waste each month, which is then sorted for later processing into compost. Meanwhile, 350 kg of waste is processed every month to be used as compost to meet the fertilization needs of the university. The waste that is processed into compost itself has gone through several processing stages and is divided into several storage tanks before finally being circulated to be used for fertilization in the university environment. At the initial stage, the waste is collected into tank I. A process occurs with the characteristics of waste with a water content of 5-20%, with a pH of 4-5 or the waste still tends to be acidic. Entering the second stage in the reservoir II, the waste has a water content of 10–25% with a PH of 5–6. Intensive decomposition occurs, which means that there is a change in the structure of the waste. Next, entering the third stage, the waste collection tank III has a moisture content of 15-25% with a PH of 6-8. At this stage, the main maturation of the waste to become compost occurs. At this stage, the compost is ripe and fresh. In the final stage, namely the fourth stage, the IV garbage collection tank has a moisture content of 15–25% with a PH of 9, or the compost starts to become alkaline. Compost at this stage tends to be ripe but still wet.

The sign of waste undergoing a fermentation process is in accordance with the criteria in stage IV, namely water content of 15–25% with a PH 9. The results of fermentation that have reached the IV reservoir are in the form of fine powder and the color becomes brown like soil. Then the compost is cooled and dried for 1 day. The characteristics of waste that is ripe and ready for use include: (1) odorless; (2) crumbs; (3) blackish in color; (4) contains nutrients available to plants; and (5) high water binding ability. The results of perfect fermentation can already be packaged to become compost that is ready to be reused in the Airlangga University area.
