ASEM DAY 2026 at Universitas Airlangga Highlights Youth Leadership in Environmental Action

SDGs UNAIR, 24 April 2026 – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through its SDGs Center and international partners, successfully organized the ASEM Day 2026 International Multi-Sector Talkshow, bringing together representatives from academia, government, civil society organizations, youth communities, and international stakeholders from Asia and Europe. The event served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration to strengthen the role of young people in addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable development.

The talk show was held in commemoration of ASEM Day, which celebrates the partnership between Asia and Europe through the Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM), a forum that promotes cooperation across political, economic, social, cultural, and educational dimensions among 53 partners from both regions.

Carrying the theme “Youth for a Greener Future: Bridging Asia and Europe for Environmental Sustainability," the event emphasized the importance of empowering young people as key agents of change in tackling climate change, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.

In his opening remarks, Prof. H. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., Head of the Sustainable Community Service Institute of Universitas Airlangga, underscored the importance of empowering young people as key actors in addressing global environmental challenges. He noted that the future of sustainability depends on the ability of younger generations to foster innovation, promote environmental awareness, and build cross-border partnerships. Through initiatives such as ASEM Day 2026, he stated, Universitas Airlangga seeks to strengthen collaboration between Asia and Europe while inspiring youth to become active contributors to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The international panel featured speakers from universities, governmental institutions, environmental organizations, and youth-led initiatives from Asia and Europe. Discussions explored various topics, including climate resilience, circular economy practices, sustainable lifestyles, environmental education, and the growing contribution of youth movements in influencing environmental policies. The speakers emphasized that meaningful youth participation is essential for achieving long-term sustainability goals and ensuring intergenerational equity.

One of the highlights of the event was the sharing session by youth environmental leaders who presented successful community-based initiatives, ranging from plastic waste reduction campaigns and mangrove conservation programs to climate awareness projects and digital innovations for environmental monitoring. These initiatives demonstrated how local actions can create significant impacts when supported by strong partnerships and collaborative networks.

The talk show also encouraged participants to strengthen cooperation between Asian and European institutions through joint research, student mobility, environmental volunteerism, and sustainable development projects. Such collaboration aligns with the core objectives of ASEM to foster people-to-people connectivity and mutual understanding between the two regions.

Through this event, Universitas Airlangga reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainability education, international collaboration, and youth engagement as part of its broader mission to contribute to global sustainable development. SDGs News — As part of its rapid response to natural disasters in Sumatra, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again mobilized a Disaster Emergency Response Team, sending volunteers to assist communities in crisis. The symbolic deployment ceremony was held on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) at Balai RUA, 4th Floor, Management Office, UNAIR MERR-C Campus, and was attended directly by UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin.

The team consists of a multidisciplinary group of volunteers from various sectors of the university, including the Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSKKA), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidisciplinary Studies (FTMM), and the Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB). The Faculty of Medicine (FK) team joined earlier UNAIR volunteers already stationed in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra on Thursday (December 4, 2025).

In his remarks, Prof. Madyan emphasized that as a higher education institution, UNAIR plays a vital role in alleviating the suffering of disaster victims, aligned with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which mandates engagement in education, research, and community service.

“Our presence in disaster-affected areas is not merely symbolic; it represents the university’s real responsibility to be part of the solution. We are proud that our medical teams, faculty, and students are actively contributing to recovery efforts in Sumatra,” he said.

He also shared that the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) had expressed appreciation for the active role of universities in responding to the recent landslides and flash floods in Sumatra.

“The Ministry strongly encourages universities to extend a helping hand. We are grateful that UNAIR began its mission last Thursday and has already treated hundreds of patients in the field,” said Prof. Madyan.

Prof. Madyan took the opportunity to deliver a personal message to all departing volunteers. He reminded them to maintain their health, uphold the university's good name, and be culturally sensitive while serving in the field.

“Aceh and Sumatra have cultural norms that differ from ours. I urge you to uphold proper ethics and conduct throughout your duties. This, too, is a form of service,” he advised.

The Rector also stressed the importance of carrying out the mission with sincerity and humility—reminding all volunteers not to view their task through a material lens but as a noble act of service.

“Once again, I wish you a safe journey. May your presence bring comfort to the victims and please do not see this as merely a duty, it is an act of devotion,” he concluded.

Head of Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB) UNAIR, Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., added that disaster response requires an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, leveraging academic, technological, medical, and social knowledge to deliver comprehensive and sustainable aid.

The deployed team will engage in a wide range of relief efforts including medical assistance, public health outreach, disaster education, and basic infrastructure recovery, strengthened by students and faculty from UNAIR's Graduate Program in Disaster Management, who bring professional expertise in risk mitigation and recovery planning.

UNAIR Holds Airlangga SDGs Kick-Off Monitoring & Evaluation 2025 to Strengthen Global Ranking Strategies

Surabaya – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the SDGs Division under the Sustainable Community Development Institute (LPMB), held the Airlangga SDGs Kick-Off Monitoring & Evaluation 2025 on Monday, 8 December 2025, at Bayu Kinara Room, 2nd Floor, Airlangga Convention Center (ACC). This activity marked a significant initial step in consolidating SDGs implementation and reporting within UNAIR as part of its strategic efforts to support the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2026.

The meeting was officially opened by the Head of LPMB, Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., who in his remarks underscored that LPMB's role goes beyond community engagement. It also serves as a strategic bridge in strengthening international collaborations and integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the university’s structure. He stressed the urgency of aligning both qualitative and quantitative data to optimize UNAIR’s performance in global ranking assessments.

Prof. Hery further emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration between LPMB and faculties in tracking activities, ensuring regular coordination, publishing news, and conducting thorough monitoring and evaluation. He highlighted the need for valid and consistent documentation of evidence, stressing that sustainable programs must be reported systematically and supported by verifiable data to maintain UNAIR’s strong position in key SDG indicators.

Following his remarks, the event was officially launched by the Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development (RICD), Prof. M. Miftahussurur, dr., M. Kes. Sp. PD-KGEH, Ph.D. In his address, Prof. Miftah expressed the importance of fostering student enthusiasm in SDGs-related initiatives. He proposed the formation of UNAIR SDGs Ambassadors to deepen student engagement and advocacy around sustainability initiatives within the university.

He also noted that benchmarking UNAIR’s progress against institutions such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) serves as a foundation for further institutional development. According to him, global rankings are not merely end results but collective achievements shaped by contributions from all university components, including academics, students, staff, and institutional units.

The core session featured a comprehensive presentation by dr. Brian Eka Rachman, Sp.PD., who introduced the Monitoring and Evaluation (Monev) SDGs Form 2025–2026 and delivered a detailed analysis of UNAIR’s faculty-level SDGs performance. He presented UNAIR’s results in the THE Impact Rankings 2025 and provided an evaluation of the previous year's monitoring outcomes. The evaluation revealed that several faculties had not yet met their SDGs targets, partly due to activities that had not been reported or published in a standardized news format.

In response, he delivered technical guidance for setting SDGs targets at the faculty level and introduced updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for writing, documenting, and submitting activities. Unair Celebrates “National Dental Health Month” on the “Silent Killer” of Gum Problems

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through its Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) and Dental Hospital (RSGM), commemorated National Dental Health Month (BKGN) 2025 in Surabaya with a strong focus on gum health, which experts described as a “silent killer”. Specialists explained that gum disease, often underestimated compared to cavities, can quietly progress and trigger serious systemic health problems, including risks to the heart and other vital organs.

Prof. Dr. Agung Krismariono, drg. M.Kes., Sp.Perio (K), Director of RSGM UNAIR, underscored the growing urgency of gum health issues in Surabaya. He reported that between September 2024 and September 2025, the hospital recorded approximately 2,150 cases of gum-related complaints, with the majority of patients arriving in already severe conditions. This data highlights the pressing need for greater public awareness and preventive measures in maintaining oral health.

Gum disease is now recognized as the second most common dental issue in Indonesia, making it a pressing public health concern. To address this, UNAIR collaborated with Unilever Indonesia (Pepsodent), PDGI, AFDOKGI, and ARSGMPI to provide free dental and gum check-ups from 18–20 November 2025, with 200 patient slots available each day. The program, now in its 16th year, carried the theme “Cek Gigi dan Gusi: Bebas Biaya, Bebas Cemas, Bebas Ribet”, aiming to make oral health services more accessible and less intimidating for the public.

Beyond treatment, the initiative also emphasized education, encouraging communities to adopt preventive habits and recognize early signs of gum problems before they escalate. By branding gum disease as a silent killer, UNAIR and its partners sought to reframe oral health as a gateway to overall well-being, reinforcing the broader vision of “Senyum Indonesia Hebat”, a campaign to build a healthier, more resilient society through awareness, prevention, and collaboration.

Under the theme “Cek Gigi dan Gusi: Bebas Biaya, Bebas Cemas, Bebas Ribet”, BKGN 2025 offers services delivered by qualified dentists, with easy registration available online via tanyapepsodent.com. In Surabaya alone, the UNAIR Dental Hospital set targets to serve 750 patients while educating 2,000 students and santri on the importance of oral health. To expand oral-health awareness, Pepsodent has also collaborated with the legendary band GIGI to release a remake of the song “Aku Gigi, Mulut Rumahku”, carrying the new message “Strong Teeth Start with Healthy Gums”.

To support continued care, Pepsodent has introduced the Pepsodent Gum Expert variant, formulated with Active Zinc and Vitamin E, clinically proven to reduce plaque, prevent bleeding gums, and nourish gum tissue. BANGKALAN – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) kembali menegaskan komitmennya dalam mendukung pembangunan berkelanjutan melalui partisipasi aktif pada Festival Mangrove ke-VIII yang diselenggarakan di Pantai Martajasah, Bangkalan, Jawa Timur, pada Senin (3/11/2025). Kegiatan ini menjadi bukti nyata kolaborasi antara pemerintah daerah, perguruan tinggi, masyarakat, serta lembaga mitra dalam menjaga kelestarian ekosistem pesisir, khususnya hutan mangrove.

Keterlibatan UNAIR pada festival ini mencerminkan pelaksanaan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, khususnya dalam pengabdian kepada masyarakat dan kontribusi terhadap pelestarian lingkungan. Kegiatan ini mencakup penanaman mangrove, pelepasliaran burung air dan kepiting, serta penyediaan layanan kesehatan gratis bagi warga sekitar. Layanan kesehatan yang diberikan meliputi pemeriksaan kesehatan umum yang dilaksanakan oleh tenaga medis UNAIR, menunjukkan kepedulian institusi terhadap peningkatan kualitas hidup masyarakat pesisir.

Rektor Universitas Airlangga, Prof. Muhammad Madyan, SE, M.Si., M.Fin., dalam sambutannya menyampaikan pentingnya peran pohon mangrove dalam menjaga ekosistem dan kesehatan lingkungan. “Penanaman mangrove bukan sekadar kegiatan simbolik, melainkan sebuah langkah strategis dalam mitigasi perubahan iklim dan peningkatan kualitas udara. Dengan menanam mangrove, kita ikut menyumbang oksigen dan menjaga keseimbangan ekologis demi keberlanjutan kehidupan,” ujarnya.

UNAIR hadir melalui sinergi bersama Ikatan Alumni (IKA) UNAIR Cabang Bangkalan, memperkuat ikatan antar-sivitas akademika dan alumni dalam menjalankan peran sosial secara berkelanjutan. Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., selaku Ketua Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan (LPMB) UNAIR, menambahkan bahwa aksi penanaman mangrove akan terus dilakukan dalam skema berkesinambungan. “Ke depan, UNAIR telah menjadwalkan kegiatan serupa di kawasan mangrove Wonorejo, Surabaya, yang akan dilakukan bersama mitra dari Malaysia. Ini menunjukkan bahwa pengabdian UNAIR berskala lokal, regional, hingga internasional,” paparnya. Sebagai bentuk penghargaan atas kontribusi aktifnya, Universitas Airlangga menerima apresiasi dari Gubernur Jawa Timur. Penghargaan tersebut diserahkan kepada Ketua LPMB UNAIR sebagai pengakuan terhadap peran UNAIR dalam mendukung perlindungan dan pengelolaan ekosistem mangrove serta kontribusinya dalam menyukseskan tujuan-tujuan SDGs.

Tidak hanya fokus pada pelestarian lingkungan, acara ini juga menjadi momentum pemberdayaan generasi muda. Mahasiswa UNAIR, Sulton Arifin, menerima beasiswa dari Bank Indonesia yang diserahkan dalam rangkaian kegiatan festival. Hal ini menegaskan bahwa partisipasi UNAIR dalam kegiatan sosial dan lingkungan senantiasa dibarengi dengan upaya penguatan kapasitas generasi penerus bangsa.

Partisipasi aktif Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dalam Festival Mangrove ke-VIII merupakan manifestasi nyata dari komitmen institusi dalam mendukung agenda global Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan atau Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pemeriksaan kesehatan umum yang dilaksanakan oleh tenaga kesehatan UNAIR menjadi wujud nyata kepedulian terhadap kesejahteraan masyarakat, khususnya di daerah yang minim akses layanan medis.
SDG 6 – Air Bersih dan Sanitasi Layak (Clean Water and Sanitation)
Penanaman mangrove di kawasan pesisir berkontribusi dalam menjaga ekosistem penyangga air bersih. Akar mangrove berperan penting dalam menyaring air serta menjaga kualitas dan kelayakan sanitasi alami di wilayah pesisir.
SDG 13 – Penanganan Perubahan Iklim (Climate Action)
Mangrove dikenal sebagai salah satu vegetasi yang memiliki kemampuan tinggi dalam menyerap karbon dioksida. Dengan demikian, kegiatan penanaman mangrove merupakan bentuk konkret kontribusi UNAIR dalam mitigasi perubahan iklim dan penanggulangan dampaknya di tingkat lokal maupun global.
SDG 14 – Ekosistem Laut (Life Below Water)
Konservasi dan penanaman mangrove turut menjaga keberlanjutan ekosistem laut. Mangrove menjadi habitat penting bagi berbagai biota laut dan berperan sebagai pelindung alami pesisir dari abrasi serta pencemaran laut.
SDG 15 – Ekosistem Daratan (Life on Land)
Rehabilitasi kawasan pesisir melalui penanaman pohon dan restorasi lingkungan merupakan bentuk pengelolaan ekosistem daratan yang berkelanjutan. Kegiatan ini tidak hanya melindungi tanah dari erosi, tetapi juga mendukung keanekaragaman hayati.
SDG 17 – Kemitraan untuk Mencapai Tujuan (Partnership for the Goals)
Kegiatan ini merupakan hasil kolaborasi strategis antara Universitas Airlangga, Ikatan Alumni (IKA) UNAIR, pemerintah daerah, dan mitra internasional. Kolaborasi ini mencerminkan pentingnya sinergi lintas sektor dalam mewujudkan tujuan pembangunan yang inklusif dan berkelanjutan.

UNAIR Empowers Communities Through ASIK Competition: Road to SDGs Festival 2025

SDGs NEWS, 17–18 October 2025 — As part of the Road to SDGs Festival 2025, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), organized a two-day workshop and training program to prepare participants for the upcoming Airlangga Sustainable and Impactful Kampung (ASIK) Competition. The event took place at the Jambangan Sub-district Office, Surabaya, and was attended by representatives from six sub-districts (kelurahan) and twelve neighborhood associations (Rukun Warga/RW).

Hands-On Training for Circular Economy and Climate Action

The workshop focused on practical techniques for managing household waste and advancing circular-economy practices at the community level. Participants learned how to transform organic waste into compost and eco-enzymes, convert used cooking oil into detergent soap and aromatic candles, and develop environmentally friendly products with market value. These innovations directly support Indonesia’s Kampung Iklim program, which promotes climate resilience and sustainable community participation. All six participating sub-districts have already achieved Kampung Madya status, reflecting their consistent commitment to environmental action. The training was therefore designed to refine their initiatives and enhance the quality of their proposals in preparation for the ASIK Competition.

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, Dr. Nurina Fitriani who delivered a welcome address and outlined the goals of the ASIK Competition. In her remarks, she explained that the competition aims to strengthen collaboration between universities and communities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level. She also shared key insights on integrating SDG values—such as environmental care, responsible production, and social inclusion—into community development initiatives. Facilitators from UNAIR’s SDGs experts and partner organizations provided additional guidance on project mapping, proposal development, and impact evaluation, ensuring that local innovations align with sustainable practices.

Turning Kampungs into Sustainable Models

The judging phase of the ASIK Competition will take place from 29 to 31 October 2025, where selected community representatives will present their projects to a panel of judges from UNAIR and partner institutions. The competition is UNAIR’s dedication to advancing SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through inclusive and community-based innovation. By connecting academic knowledge with local empowerment, Universitas Airlangga continues to help transform Surabaya’s kampungs into models of sustainability—where waste becomes value, collaboration inspires innovation, and local action contributes to global progress toward a greener future.

Universitas Airlangga Hosts the 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting: Mangrove Action for Coastal Ecosystem Restoration

SDGs News — Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), proudly hosted the national event “The 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting: Community Service Restoring the Coastal Ecosystem with Mangrove Action" 14/10/2025.

The event brought together student representatives from universities across Indonesia to collaborate on environmental conservation initiatives, focusing on coastal ecosystem restoration through mangrove planting at the Wonorejo Mangrove Area, Surabaya.

Collaborative Learning and Environmental Action

Before the mangrove planting activity, participants joined a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) session on the ecological and global benefits of mangroves, which highlighted their crucial role in mitigating climate change, protecting coastal biodiversity, preventing erosion, and maintaining water quality. The session encouraged students to connect scientific understanding with community-based action, strengthening awareness of how local efforts contribute to planetary sustainability.

The program was attended by Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., PhD, Head of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, along with his leadership team, and Yunita Suci Amalia, Environmental Impact Control Officer from the East Java Provincial Environmental Agency (DLH). Their involvement underscored the strong synergy between universities, government institutions, and youth leaders in advancing sustainability goals.

Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Through this initiative, Universitas Airlangga reaffirmed its strong commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The mangrove restoration effort supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by improving water quality through the natural filtration provided by mangrove roots, which trap sediments and absorb pollutants. It advances SDG 13 (Climate Action) by increasing carbon absorption and strengthening coastal resilience against the impacts of climate change. At the same time, the activity contributes to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by restoring breeding grounds for fish and marine species and revitalizing biodiversity vital to coastal livelihoods, and it supports SDG 15 (Life on Land) through soil conservation and sustainable land management.

Restoring Balance Between People and Nature

More than a symbolic gesture, the collaborative mangrove action reflects UNAIR’s enduring vision of harmony between people and nature. It demonstrates the power of youth-led environmental stewardship and community service in safeguarding the planet’s ecosystems—showing that real change begins with collective action, one coastline at a time.

UNAIR Wujudkan Kampus Impian bagi Mahasiswa Disabilitas

Sejak tahun 2016, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) telah membuktikan komitmennya sebagai kampus ramah disabilitas, membuka pintu bagi semua lapisan masyarakat, termasuk mereka yang memiliki keterbatasan fisik. Komitmen ini tidak hanya tercermin dari kebijakan inklusif yang diterapkan, tetapi juga dalam upaya konkret untuk memastikan bahwa setiap mahasiswa dapat mengakses pendidikan dengan adil dan setara.

Drs. Koko Srimulyo, M.Si, salah satu pimpinan kampus, dengan tegas menyatakan bahwa UNAIR tidak akan pernah membedakan mahasiswa disabilitas dari mahasiswa lainnya. Pada proses seleksi mandiri, baik untuk program reguler maupun beasiswa Bidikmisi, UNAIR memberikan perhatian khusus dengan menyediakan fasilitas yang memadai. Mereka yang memiliki disabilitas, misalnya penyandang disabilitas netra, difasilitasi dengan ruangan khusus, serta pendampingan yang intensif selama ujian. Bagi mahasiswa yang tidak dapat melihat, ada petugas yang secara sabar membacakan soal dan pilihan jawaban, memastikan bahwa mereka tetap dapat berpartisipasi tanpa halangan. Mahasiswa cukup menyebutkan jawaban yang dianggap benar, dan petugas akan menuliskannya di lembar jawaban.

Lebih dari sekadar proses seleksi, UNAIR juga memberikan dukungan dalam hal kesempatan internasional. Sejak 2016, UNAIR telah aktif membantu mahasiswa disabilitas untuk mendapatkan Beasiswa ASEAN University Network Disability Public Policy Network (AUNDPPNet). Beasiswa ini dirancang untuk mahasiswa magister di universitas anggota ASEAN University Network, dengan fokus utama pada kebijakan publik yang berkaitan dengan disabilitas. Prof. Myrtati Dyah Artaria, yang berperan sebagai pembimbing beasiswa ini, menjelaskan bahwa UNAIR lebih berfokus pada bimbingan dibandingkan bantuan langsung. Ini dilakukan karena UNAIR ingin mahasiswa disabilitas dapat mandiri. Meski begitu, bimbingan yang diberikan sangat berharga, mulai dari membantu mereka berkomunikasi dengan pihak AUNDPPNet hingga memberikan masukan tentang proposal dan bagaimana menghadapi tantangan studi yang mungkin muncul.

Namun, langkah UNAIR tak berhenti di situ. Sebagai kampus yang terus berkembang menuju inklusivitas, UNAIR telah melakukan banyak perubahan fisik di lingkungan kampusnya. Kini, mahasiswa penyandang disabilitas dapat menikmati fasilitas-fasilitas yang dirancang khusus untuk mereka, mulai dari blok pemandu di area pejalan kaki, toilet dengan penyangga khusus dan pintu yang lebih lebar, tempat parkir difabel, jalur kursi roda, ramp untuk memudahkan mobilitas kursi roda, hingga lift yang mempermudah akses ke lantai-lantai atas gedung kampus.

Setiap langkah kecil yang diambil UNAIR menunjukkan satu hal: bahwa mereka berdedikasi untuk menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang inklusif, di mana setiap mahasiswa, tanpa memandang kemampuan fisik, memiliki kesempatan yang sama untuk sukses. Kisah ini tidak hanya menjadi bukti komitmen, tetapi juga inspirasi bahwa sebuah institusi pendidikan bisa menjadi agen perubahan sosial yang lebih baik, di mana semua orang memiliki tempat yang setara.

7th Mangrove Festival: UNAIR Academic Community and Alumni Take Action to Advance SDGs in East Java

SDGs Center - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), in collaboration with the East Java Provincial Government, held a community engagement program entitled the 7th Mangrove Festival 2025. The event took place on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) at Tambak Bahak Beach, Curah Dringu Village, Tongas District, Probolinggo Regency. The Mangrove Festival has been organized annually since 2022, focusing on climate change mitigation and coastal ecosystem restoration. To date, the program has reached one city and five regencies in East Java. This year, Probolinggo was chosen as the host due to its strategic position in strengthening the coastal green belt in central East Java.

UNAIR was represented by faculty members and students from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Faculty of Vocational Studies, and UNAIR’s SDGs Center, supported by the Alumni Association (IKA UNAIR). They actively participated in planting thousands of mangrove seedlings, releasing waterbirds and crabs, and providing free healthcare services for coastal communities. This multi-stakeholder collaboration supports SDG achievements both at the university and provincial levels. For UNAIR, the initiative reinforces contributions to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). For East Java Province, it aligns with the Regional Action Plan (RAD) for SDGs, which prioritizes coastal conservation and improved livelihoods for local fishers.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni of UNAIR, Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We need to jointly address pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Mangroves play a critical role in determining the quality of coastal green belts. By engaging both the academic community and alumni, UNAIR is not only active in the academic sphere but also delivers real solutions for society,” he stated. He added that Probolinggo was chosen for its potential to disseminate best practices in mangrove restoration. “From this central point, we can replicate and expand the success model to other coastal regions across East Java,” he continued.

The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, underscored that planting mangroves can be seen as an oxygen charity. In addition to absorbing carbon and preventing coastal abrasion, mangrove ecosystems provide natural habitats for fish and crabs, which boost local fishers’ productivity. "With the existence of mangroves, fishers no longer need to go far out to sea to catch fish. This will improve coastal communities’ welfare and contribute to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) in East Java,” she explained.

UNAIR’s involvement in the 7th Mangrove Festival demonstrates the university’s strong commitment to advancing sustainability agendas, both at the campus and provincial levels. Through collaborative action involving academia, government, the private sector, and communities, this initiative strengthens East Java’s position as a proactive province in achieving the SDGs.
