One of UNAIR’s key initiatives in marine conservation took place at Tiga Warna Beach in Malang, where students from the Faculty of Medicine spearheaded a coral reef restoration project. Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is committed to upholding high standards of water quality to protect ecosystems, wildlife, and public health. In alignment with Indonesia’s Government Regulation No. 22/2021 and Ministerial Regulation No. P.68/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/8/2016, UNAIR has established internal guidelines under Rector’s Decrees No. 2094/UN3/2016 and No. 1050/UN3/2021. These policies focus on sustainable water use, water conservation, strict quality standards, and effective recycling and filtration processes. They also emphasize the reduced use of deep wells, efficient tap systems, and ongoing water quality management.

Advanced Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for Sustainable Water Management

To ensure all water discharge meets national and institutional standards, UNAIR operates a sophisticated Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that processes wastewater through six critical stages:

Collection

Wastewater from various facilities is collected and directed to the treatment plant.

Pre-Treatment

Solids and larger particles are removed to prevent system clogs and ensure effective treatment.

Bio-Treatment

Beneficial microorganisms break down organic matter, reducing harmful pollutants.

Sedimentation

The treated water undergoes sedimentation to separate residual solids.

Filtration

Fine particles are filtered out, ensuring high water purity.

Disinfection

Final disinfection neutralizes any remaining pathogens, making the water safe for reuse.

Treated water is repurposed for irrigation, flushing, and other non-potable uses on campus, minimizing the environmental impact of water discharge. This comprehensive treatment process protects surrounding ecosystems, including aquatic habitats, by ensuring water is free from harmful pollutants before it reenters the environment.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement and Community Impact

UNAIR’s approach goes beyond regulatory compliance; the university is focused on continuous improvement in sustainable water management. Universitas Airlangga Strengthens Community Partnership to Preserve Shared Aquatic Ecosystems

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is committed to safeguarding shared aquatic ecosystems through close collaboration with local communities. By partnering on a range of environmental initiatives, UNAIR is helping to restore biodiversity, promote sustainable practices, and foster ecological stewardship across Indonesia.

In 2023, UNAIR’s Aesculap Environmental Study Group from the Faculty of Medicine, in partnership with GENCORPS, initiated a reforestation project on Mount Penanggungan in Mojokerto. Planting 17 native trees, the program aimed to enhance watershed health, directly benefiting the Brantas watershed region, which is essential for both terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity.

Through the Airlangga Community Development Hub (ACDH), the Faculty of Pharmacy conducted educational outreach in Gili Iyang, Madura, introducing local residents to the health benefits of sea grapes (Caulerpa sp.). By encouraging the sustainable harvesting of sea grapes for their antioxidant, antibacterial, and immune-boosting properties, UNAIR promotes ecological balance while supporting the health and economy of coastal communities.

Furthermore, UNAIR’s Airventure program, in collaboration with the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) consortium, gathered 114 participants from 10 countries in Surabaya and Banyuwangi. This program emphasized marine conservation and sustainable blue economy practices. Activities included mangrove conservation workshops at the Wonorejo Mangrove Forest and turtle release initiatives at Bom Beach, Banyuwangi, which play a crucial role in maintaining marine ecosystems and protecting coastal biodiversity.

Given the recent extinction of the Java Ray due to overfishing and harmful fishing techniques, UNAIR's Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences has intensified its outreach initiatives to promote sustainable methods and preserve Indonesia's aquatic resources.

Movement Alive Society Program

One of UNAIR’s flagship community programs is the “Introduction Knowledge About Nutrients—Movement Alive Society,” held in Kepetingan Village, targeting local fishermen who rely on coastal resources. Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is deeply committed to safeguarding Indonesia's aquatic ecosystems by regularly monitoring their health, supporting conservation efforts, and advancing scientific research.

At the university’s on-campus conservation lake, regular monitoring activities are undertaken to assess water quality and habitat conditions, ensuring the vitality of the aquatic ecosystem. The lake's management team conducts routine pH tests and measures water flow to maintain balanced conditions for the species residing within. Additionally, they record the diversity of aquatic species to adapt conservation measures to specific habitat needs. This continuous assessment allows UNAIR to promptly address any issues that may affect the lake's ecosystem health, creating a learning resource for students and a living example of sustainable ecosystem management.

Beyond the campus, UNAIR has formed strategic partnerships to expand its monitoring and conservation reach. Through a collaboration with IPB University and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, UNAIR is engaged in monitoring key maritime zones, particularly the Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lanes (ALKI) and Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). This research focuses on preventing marine degradation by monitoring water quality, marine life diversity, and ecological conditions within these critical areas. As Indonesia’s waters are vital corridors for biodiversity and international navigation, the research findings support sustainable management practices that align with national and international environmental standards, promoting both conservation and safe navigation.

UNAIR’s efforts extend to coral reef ecosystems, particularly at Bangsring Beach in East Java, where the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences leads conservation and monitoring projects. The beach, known for its ecotourism appeal, has a 38.33% coral coverage, including 30% hard coral and 8.33% soft coral. The conservation team conducts regular assessments to understand the health and growth of coral species, which play a critical role in marine biodiversity and coastal protection. The team’s work supports coral restoration, helping to bolster natural defenses against coastal erosion while promoting the beach as a sustainable ecotourism destination that benefits local communities economically and environmentally.

Further expanding its monitoring initiatives, UNAIR has undertaken research on Bajulmati Reservoir in Situbondo, conducted by university lecturers focused on assessing water productivity. The study classified the reservoir’s water as eutrophic, indicating high levels of nutrients and productivity, which are essential factors in evaluating ecosystem health. The findings provide a foundation for managing the reservoir sustainably, balancing water quality with ecological productivity to support aquatic life and community needs.

Universitas Airlangga Drives Aquatic Stewardship with International Conservation Programs and Community Initiatives

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has taken a proactive approach to aquatic stewardship, developing and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable waterway management and conservation practices. In partnership with the World University Association for Community Development and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UNAIR led a community service program in Kampong Sungai Melayu, Johor, focused on developing sustainable ecotourism. The program, which included 21 UNAIR experts, empowered local residents to enhance Sungai Melayu’s ecotourism potential while preserving its aquatic ecosystem. This collaboration has laid the foundation for sustainable tourism practices that protect local biodiversity and support the community’s economy.

In response to a severe pollution incident at the Kim-Kim River, where illegal chemical dumping had affected around 5,000 people, UNAIR students organized a river cleanup. Utilizing mud bowls to reduce chemical contamination, students worked to restore the river’s health, demonstrating practical solutions for pollution management that align with good stewardship practices.

In another effort to promote marine conservation, UNAIR’s School of Health and Natural Sciences hosted a conservation expedition in Alas Purwo, Banyuwangi, with 63 international students participating. The expedition included coral planting at Bangsring Beach and explorations of marine life at Tabuhan Island, equipping students with skills in coral restoration and raising awareness about marine biodiversity.
