UNAIR DEPLOYS DISASTER RESPONSE TEAM TO SUMATRA: RECTOR ATTENDS DEPLOYMENT CEREMONY, STRENGTHENS ACADEMIC SYNERGY FOR EMERGENCY ACTION

SDGs News — As part of its rapid response to natural disasters in Sumatra, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again mobilized a Disaster Emergency Response Team, sending volunteers to assist communities in crisis. The symbolic deployment ceremony was held on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) at Balai RUA, 4th Floor, Management Office, UNAIR MERR-C Campus, and was attended directly by UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin.

The team consists of a multidisciplinary group of volunteers from various sectors of the university, including the Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSKKA), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidisciplinary Studies (FTMM), and the Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB). The Faculty of Medicine (FK) team joined earlier UNAIR volunteers already stationed in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra on Thursday (December 4, 2025).

In his remarks, Prof. Madyan emphasized that as a higher education institution, UNAIR plays a vital role in alleviating the suffering of disaster victims, aligned with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which mandates engagement in education, research, and community service.

“Our presence in disaster-affected areas is not merely symbolic; it represents the university’s real responsibility to be part of the solution. We are proud that our medical teams, faculty, and students are actively contributing to recovery efforts in Sumatra,” he said.

He also shared that the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) had expressed appreciation for the active role of universities in responding to the recent landslides and flash floods in Sumatra.

“The Ministry strongly encourages universities to extend a helping hand. We are grateful that UNAIR began its mission last Thursday and has already treated hundreds of patients in the field,” said Prof. Madyan.

Prof. Madyan took the opportunity to deliver a personal message to all departing volunteers. He reminded them to maintain their health, uphold the university's good name, and be culturally sensitive while serving in the field.

“Aceh and Sumatra have cultural norms that differ from ours. I urge you to uphold proper ethics and conduct throughout your duties. This, too, is a form of service,” he advised.

The Rector also stressed the importance of carrying out the mission with sincerity and humility—reminding all volunteers not to view their task through a material lens but as a noble act of service.

“Once again, I wish you a safe journey. May your presence bring comfort to the victims and please do not see this as merely a duty, it is an act of devotion,” he concluded.

Head of Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB) UNAIR, Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., added that disaster response requires an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, leveraging academic, technological, medical, and social knowledge to deliver comprehensive and sustainable aid.

The deployed team will engage in a wide range of relief efforts including medical assistance, public health outreach, disaster education, and basic infrastructure recovery, strengthened by students and faculty from UNAIR's Graduate Program in Disaster Management, who bring professional expertise in risk mitigation and recovery planning.

UNAIR Empowers Communities Through ASIK Competition: Road to SDGs Festival 2025

SDGs NEWS, 17–18 October 2025 — As part of the Road to SDGs Festival 2025, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), organized a two-day workshop and training program to prepare participants for the upcoming Airlangga Sustainable and Impactful Kampung (ASIK) Competition. The event took place at the Jambangan Sub-district Office, Surabaya, and was attended by representatives from six sub-districts (kelurahan) and twelve neighborhood associations (Rukun Warga/RW).

Hands-On Training for Circular Economy and Climate Action

The workshop focused on practical techniques for managing household waste and advancing circular-economy practices at the community level. Participants learned how to transform organic waste into compost and eco-enzymes, convert used cooking oil into detergent soap and aromatic candles, and develop environmentally friendly products with market value. These innovations directly support Indonesia’s Kampung Iklim program, which promotes climate resilience and sustainable community participation. All six participating sub-districts have already achieved Kampung Madya status, reflecting their consistent commitment to environmental action. The training was therefore designed to refine their initiatives and enhance the quality of their proposals in preparation for the ASIK Competition.

UNAIR’s Commitment to Sustainable Community Empowerment

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, Dr. Nurina Fitriani who delivered a welcome address and outlined the goals of the ASIK Competition. In her remarks, she explained that the competition aims to strengthen collaboration between universities and communities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level. She also shared key insights on integrating SDG values—such as environmental care, responsible production, and social inclusion—into community development initiatives. Facilitators from UNAIR’s SDGs experts and partner organizations provided additional guidance on project mapping, proposal development, and impact evaluation, ensuring that local innovations align with sustainable practices.

Turning Kampungs into Sustainable Models

The judging phase of the ASIK Competition will take place from 29 to 31 October 2025, where selected community representatives will present their projects to a panel of judges from UNAIR and partner institutions. The competition is UNAIR’s dedication to advancing SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through inclusive and community-based innovation. By connecting academic knowledge with local empowerment, Universitas Airlangga continues to help transform Surabaya’s kampungs into models of sustainability—where waste becomes value, collaboration inspires innovation, and local action contributes to global progress toward a greener future.

FIB Bekerjasama dengan Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Kota Surabaya Wujudkan Kota Berkelanjutan Melalui Urban Heritage Tourism

Fakultas Ilmu Budaya (FIB) Universitas Airlangga (Unair) semakin mempertegas komitmennya terhadap Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) melalui kemitraan strategis yang inovatif. Pada 28 Juli 2021, sebuah pertemuan penting digelar antara FIB Unair dan Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata (Disbudpar) Kota Surabaya. Pertemuan ini bertujuan untuk menjelajahi kemungkinan kerjasama dalam pengembangan seni dan budaya, dengan harapan menciptakan kota dan komunitas yang berkelanjutan.

Dekan FIB Unair, Prof. Dr. Purnawan Basundoro, berbicara dengan penuh semangat tentang pentingnya sinergi antara FIB dan Disbudpar, menyoroti bagaimana keduanya berbagi visi yang sama. Kepala Disbudpar, Ir. Antiek Sugiharti, menyambut dengan antusiasme tinggi ide-ide Unair dan berharap kolaborasi ini akan memperkaya berbagai program wisata di Surabaya, termasuk pengembangan wisata heritage, kawasan Tunjungan, dan Sungai Kalimas. Selain itu, Kukuh Yudha Karnanta, dosen dari Departemen Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris FIB Unair, memperkenalkan gagasan "Gerakan Surabaya Kota Kreatif," sebuah inisiatif untuk mendorong kemajuan seni dan budaya melalui kerjasama antara akademisi, pelaku seni, pemerintah, dan media.

Untuk mempercepat kemajuan industri kreatif di Surabaya, FIB Unair mengorganisir acara "Srawung Budaya" pada 15 Desember 2021 di Hotel Majapahit. Acara ini mengusung konsep 'pentahelix', menjadi panggung diskusi yang melibatkan berbagai pihak untuk merumuskan model pengembangan urban heritage tourism di kota tersebut. Para peserta yang hadir meliputi tim peneliti dari FIB Unair, Kepala Disbudpar Surabaya, Kepala Dinas Perpustakaan dan Kearsipan Surabaya, komunitas sejarah dan budaya, pelaku usaha seperti Hotel Majapahit, serta media massa seperti Jawa Pos.

Tak hanya itu, Kementerian Seni dan Budaya BEM FIB Unair Kabinet Brahmastra akan mengadakan "Urban Heritage Trip" pada 5 Oktober 2024 yang dapat diikuti oleh mahasiswa baru FIB yang berasal dari luar kota untuk menjelajahi Kota Lama Surabaya, serta Kampung Peneleh yang dikenal sebagai tempat tinggal Ir. Soekarno, proklamator kemerdekaan Indonesia. Acara ini berlangsung dari pukul 07.00 hingga 14.00 WIB, bertujuan untuk memberikan pengalaman mendalam tentang warisan sejarah Surabaya dan meninggalkan kesan yang mendalam bagi mahasiswa baru.

Dr. Listiyono Santoso, koordinator penelitian dari FIB Unair, memaparkan riset mereka yang berfokus pada Surabaya. Riset ini bertujuan untuk merancang model pengembangan urban heritage tourism dan menghasilkan rekomendasi kebijakan untuk pemerintah provinsi serta kabupaten/kota. Dengan harapan, hasil riset ini akan membantu menjaga kota tetap layak huni sekaligus memperkuat daya tariknya sebagai destinasi wisata budaya sesuai dengan target SDG ke-11 tentang Pembangunan Berkelanjutan.

UNAIR: Cultural Preservation with Programs on Javanese Script, Wayang Tradition, and Heritage Workshops

SDGs News – In a world increasingly shaped by globalization, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is dedicated to preserving Indonesia’s cultural heritage, especially local languages and traditions, through a series of educational programs and cultural initiatives. Recent projects such as the Surabaya Cultural Odyssey, the Airlangga Dalang Festival (ADF) 2023, and community heritage workshops reflect UNAIR’s commitment to fostering a deep appreciation for traditional arts and languages among diverse audiences, including international visitors.

The Surabaya Cultural Odyssey introduced foreign students, particularly from Philipps-Universität Marburg in Germany, to the Javanese script. Led by Nanang Purwono of Puri Aksara Rajapatni, the program focused on the importance of preserving this unique script, which faces challenges due to the widespread use of the Latin alphabet. By engaging international students in learning the Javanese script, UNAIR underscores its role in protecting endangered cultural elements and promoting global awareness of Indonesia’s rich linguistic heritage.

In collaboration with the East Java Culture and Tourism Office, UNAIR organized the Airlangga Dalang Festival (ADF) 2023, a festival devoted to cultivating young talent in the traditional art of wayang (puppetry). The event celebrated child puppeteers, showcasing their mastery in bringing wayang characters to life. ADF 2023 aimed to instill in younger generations a deep respect for wayang as both a cultural heritage and an art form, promoting character development through storytelling and performance. This festival served as a platform for young dalangs (puppeteers) to hone their craft, ensuring the continuity of this treasured Indonesian tradition.

Furthering its cultural preservation efforts, UNAIR held a workshop titled "Exploring Heritage, Preservation, Tangible, and Intangible History Through Self-Narrative: A Case from Peneleh." This workshop encouraged community members to reflect on and share their personal experiences related to local history and culture, fostering a sense of pride and collective responsibility for preserving Surabaya’s cultural heritage.

Universitas Airlangga reaffirms its role as a cultural steward, actively working to safeguard and celebrate Indonesia’s traditions in an era of globalization. One of the highlights is The Airlangga University Choir, which recently held its Annual Concert titled "ALMA NUEVA," translating to "A New Soul." This concert symbolized a rejuvenated spirit, bringing fresh energy and passion to the choir’s performances. Audiences were captivated by the ensemble’s powerful voices and their dedication to expressing hope and renewal through music.

The Airlangga Orchestra also hosted a notable performance with the theme "Movie Symphony 2.0." This concert featured orchestral renditions of beloved movie soundtracks, enchanting the audience with symphonic adaptations that brought cinematic scores to life. The event showcased the orchestra’s talent and underscored UNAIR’s dedication to both musical excellence and cultural enrichment.

Universitas Airlangga Promotes Sustainable Commuting with Electric Bicycles, Free Buses, and Enhanced Pedestrian Facilities

SDGs News – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is championing sustainable commuting options on campus with a suite of eco-friendly initiatives designed to reduce carbon emissions and create a greener environment for its academic community. Key measures include the introduction of electric bicycles for students and faculty, free Flash Bus services, and continuously upgraded pedestrian infrastructure.

To reduce the reliance on motorcycles and curb emissions, UNAIR has provided a fleet of electric bicycles for students and staff. With convenient parking and secure storage facilities, these electric bicycles offer an accessible, eco-conscious transportation option within the university area, contributing significantly to reducing air pollution on campus.

Further supporting sustainable mobility, UNAIR operates free Flash Buses that connect Campuses A, B, and C, allowing students to move seamlessly between campuses without the need for personal motor vehicles. The Flash Buses, available at dedicated stops, enable students to commute sustainably and at no cost, reinforcing UNAIR’s commitment to sustainability.

In line with these efforts, UNAIR has implemented policies across all faculties that encourage students to use the provided sustainable transportation options or walk within the university grounds. Restrictions are in place for private vehicle use, with cars prohibited for students and motorized vehicle access limited to those in semester 5 and above.

To support these policies, UNAIR continually updates its pedestrian infrastructure, ensuring safe and comfortable pathways and sidewalks for those who choose to walk. This focus on pedestrian accessibility encourages students to adopt healthier, more sustainable commuting habits.

Through these initiatives, Universitas Airlangga not only promotes sustainable commuting but also fosters a culture of environmental responsibility among its students and staff. By creating accessible and sustainable transportation options, UNAIR is leading the way in building a greener campus and setting a standard for environmentally friendly practices in higher education.

SDGs Center Berpartisipasi dalam Kegiatan International Community Development Program di Sungai Kim-Kim Malaysia

MALAYSIA - Ketua SDGs Center Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan International Community Development Program yang diinisiasi oleh Universitas Airlangga dalam menekankan capaian Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). Kegiatan ini berkolaborasi dengan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) yang berlangsung pada tanggal 26 Agustus 2023 dengan agenda pengabdian masyarakat di Kampong Sungai Melayu, Johor Malaysia.

Sungai Kim-Kim telah tercemar limbah kimia beracun yang dibuang secara ilegal pada bulan Maret 2019. Limbah yang dibuang ke Sungai Kim-Kim sejak itu telah diidentifikasi sebagai limbah minyak laut yang mengeluarkan gas metana dan uap bensin. Hal ini mencemari sekitar 5.000 orang dan ratusan diantaranya harus dirawat di rumah sakit.

Kolaborasi antara UNAIR dan UTM, dengan partisipasi Persatuan Industri Pasir Gudang, untuk membersihkan sungai dan meningkatkan penggunaan efektif mikroorganisme adalah langkah yang sangat positif dalam upaya menjaga lingkungan dan keberlanjutan di daerah Sungai Kim-Kim. Membersihkan sungai dan menanam pohon penggunaan efek mikroorganisme menjadi MUD BOWL untuk mengurangi sisa kotoran di sungai.

Dalam rangka mendukung SDGs, selain perwujudan dari SDG 17 (Kemitraan untuk Pencapaian Tujuan), kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat kali ini juga mendukung pencapaian SDGs lain yaitu, SDG 11 tentang Kota dan Komunitas yang Berkelanjutan dan SDG 14 tentang Ekosistem Perairan.

Universitas Airlangga Provides Affordable Housing for Students with Comprehensive Dormitory Facilities

SDGs News – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is committed to supporting students’ well-being and academic success by offering affordable housing options through on-campus dormitories located in Campus C. These facilities cater to both male and female students, with a special focus on accessibility for international and economically disadvantaged students.

The male dormitory is a 5-level building with 96 rooms, providing accommodation for up to 384 students. Meanwhile, the female dormitory spans 11 levels with 206 rooms, allowing up to 618 students to reside on campus. These spacious and well-equipped dormitories create a supportive environment for UNAIR students, fostering a sense of community and ensuring proximity to campus facilities.

Additionally, UNAIR has established Griya Khadijah, a unique residential facility dedicated to students who excel in character and Quranic memorization, with a requirement of at least five memorized chapters. Griya Khadijah is designed not only to provide accommodation but also to nurture students’ personal and academic growth through a structured mentoring program. This program aims to support residents in developing their entrepreneurial skills and achieving their future goals, reflecting UNAIR’s commitment to holistic student development.

These housing initiatives highlight Universitas Airlangga’s dedication to offering quality and affordable living options that cater to diverse student needs, helping ensure all students have access to a comfortable and supportive living environment.
