SDGs News — As part of its rapid response to natural disasters in Sumatra, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again mobilized a Disaster Emergency Response Team, sending volunteers to assist communities in crisis. The symbolic deployment ceremony was held on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) at Balai RUA, 4th Floor, Management Office, UNAIR MERR-C Campus, and was attended directly by UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin.

The team consists of a multidisciplinary group of volunteers from various sectors of the university, including the Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSKKA), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidisciplinary Studies (FTMM), and the Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB). The Faculty of Medicine (FK) team joined earlier UNAIR volunteers already stationed in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra on Thursday (December 4, 2025).

In his remarks, Prof. Madyan emphasized that as a higher education institution, UNAIR plays a vital role in alleviating the suffering of disaster victims, aligned with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which mandates engagement in education, research, and community service.

“Our presence in disaster-affected areas is not merely symbolic; it represents the university’s real responsibility to be part of the solution. We are proud that our medical teams, faculty, and students are actively contributing to recovery efforts in Sumatra,” he said.

He also shared that the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) had expressed appreciation for the active role of universities in responding to the recent landslides and flash floods in Sumatra.

“The Ministry strongly encourages universities to extend a helping hand. We are grateful that UNAIR began its mission last Thursday and has already treated hundreds of patients in the field,” said Prof. Madyan.

Prof. Madyan took the opportunity to deliver a personal message to all departing volunteers. He reminded them to maintain their health, uphold the university's good name, and be culturally sensitive while serving in the field.

“Aceh and Sumatra have cultural norms that differ from ours. I urge you to uphold proper ethics and conduct throughout your duties. This, too, is a form of service,” he advised.

The Rector also stressed the importance of carrying out the mission with sincerity and humility—reminding all volunteers not to view their task through a material lens but as a noble act of service.

“Once again, I wish you a safe journey. May your presence bring comfort to the victims and please do not see this as merely a duty, it is an act of devotion,” he concluded.

Head of Airlangga Institute for Community Development, Impact, and Sustainability (LPMB) UNAIR, Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., added that disaster response requires an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, leveraging academic, technological, medical, and social knowledge to deliver comprehensive and sustainable aid.

The deployed team will engage in a wide range of relief efforts including medical assistance, public health outreach, disaster education, and basic infrastructure recovery, strengthened by students and faculty from UNAIR's Graduate Program in Disaster Management, who bring professional expertise in risk mitigation and recovery planning.

UNAIR Tegaskan Komitmen terhadap SDGs melalui Partisipasi Aktif dalam Festival Mangrove ke-VIII

BANGKALAN – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) kembali menegaskan komitmennya dalam mendukung pembangunan berkelanjutan melalui partisipasi aktif pada Festival Mangrove ke-VIII yang diselenggarakan di Pantai Martajasah, Bangkalan, Jawa Timur, pada Senin (3/11/2025). Kegiatan ini menjadi bukti nyata kolaborasi antara pemerintah daerah, perguruan tinggi, masyarakat, serta lembaga mitra dalam menjaga kelestarian ekosistem pesisir, khususnya hutan mangrove.

Keterlibatan UNAIR pada festival ini mencerminkan pelaksanaan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, khususnya dalam pengabdian kepada masyarakat dan kontribusi terhadap pelestarian lingkungan. Kegiatan ini mencakup penanaman mangrove, pelepasliaran burung air dan kepiting, serta penyediaan layanan kesehatan gratis bagi warga sekitar. Layanan kesehatan yang diberikan meliputi pemeriksaan kesehatan umum yang dilaksanakan oleh tenaga medis UNAIR, menunjukkan kepedulian institusi terhadap peningkatan kualitas hidup masyarakat pesisir.

Rektor Universitas Airlangga, Prof. Muhammad Madyan, SE, M.Si., M.Fin., dalam sambutannya menyampaikan pentingnya peran pohon mangrove dalam menjaga ekosistem dan kesehatan lingkungan. “Penanaman mangrove bukan sekadar kegiatan simbolik, melainkan sebuah langkah strategis dalam mitigasi perubahan iklim dan peningkatan kualitas udara. Dengan menanam mangrove, kita ikut menyumbang oksigen dan menjaga keseimbangan ekologis demi keberlanjutan kehidupan,” ujarnya.

UNAIR hadir melalui sinergi bersama Ikatan Alumni (IKA) UNAIR Cabang Bangkalan, memperkuat ikatan antar-sivitas akademika dan alumni dalam menjalankan peran sosial secara berkelanjutan. Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D., selaku Ketua Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan (LPMB) UNAIR, menambahkan bahwa aksi penanaman mangrove akan terus dilakukan dalam skema berkesinambungan. “Ke depan, UNAIR telah menjadwalkan kegiatan serupa di kawasan mangrove Wonorejo, Surabaya, yang akan dilakukan bersama mitra dari Malaysia. Ini menunjukkan bahwa pengabdian UNAIR berskala lokal, regional, hingga internasional,” paparnya. Sebagai bentuk penghargaan atas kontribusi aktifnya, Universitas Airlangga menerima apresiasi dari Gubernur Jawa Timur. Penghargaan tersebut diserahkan kepada Ketua LPMB UNAIR sebagai pengakuan terhadap peran UNAIR dalam mendukung perlindungan dan pengelolaan ekosistem mangrove serta kontribusinya dalam menyukseskan tujuan-tujuan SDGs.

Tidak hanya fokus pada pelestarian lingkungan, acara ini juga menjadi momentum pemberdayaan generasi muda. Mahasiswa UNAIR, Sulton Arifin, menerima beasiswa dari Bank Indonesia yang diserahkan dalam rangkaian kegiatan festival. Hal ini menegaskan bahwa partisipasi UNAIR dalam kegiatan sosial dan lingkungan senantiasa dibarengi dengan upaya penguatan kapasitas generasi penerus bangsa.

Partisipasi aktif Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dalam Festival Mangrove ke-VIII merupakan manifestasi nyata dari komitmen institusi dalam mendukung agenda global Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan atau Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Kegiatan ini tidak hanya sebatas seremoni, melainkan mencerminkan integrasi nilai-nilai keberlanjutan dalam Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang dijalankan UNAIR.

Secara khusus, keterlibatan UNAIR dalam kegiatan tersebut menunjukkan dukungan konkret terhadap enam poin SDGs berikut:

SDG 3 – Kehidupan Sehat dan Sejahtera (Good Health and Well-being)
Melalui penyediaan layanan kesehatan gratis bagi masyarakat pesisir, UNAIR berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan akses layanan kesehatan dasar. Pemeriksaan kesehatan umum yang dilaksanakan oleh tenaga kesehatan UNAIR menjadi wujud nyata kepedulian terhadap kesejahteraan masyarakat, khususnya di daerah yang minim akses layanan medis.
SDG 6 – Air Bersih dan Sanitasi Layak (Clean Water and Sanitation)
Penanaman mangrove di kawasan pesisir berkontribusi dalam menjaga ekosistem penyangga air bersih. Akar mangrove berperan penting dalam menyaring air serta menjaga kualitas dan kelayakan sanitasi alami di wilayah pesisir.
SDG 13 – Penanganan Perubahan Iklim (Climate Action)
Mangrove dikenal sebagai salah satu vegetasi yang memiliki kemampuan tinggi dalam menyerap karbon dioksida. Dengan demikian, kegiatan penanaman mangrove merupakan bentuk konkret kontribusi UNAIR dalam mitigasi perubahan iklim dan penanggulangan dampaknya di tingkat lokal maupun global.
SDG 14 – Ekosistem Laut (Life Below Water)
Konservasi dan penanaman mangrove turut menjaga keberlanjutan ekosistem laut. Mangrove menjadi habitat penting bagi berbagai biota laut dan berperan sebagai pelindung alami pesisir dari abrasi serta pencemaran laut.
SDG 15 – Ekosistem Daratan (Life on Land)
Rehabilitasi kawasan pesisir melalui penanaman pohon dan restorasi lingkungan merupakan bentuk pengelolaan ekosistem daratan yang berkelanjutan. Kegiatan ini tidak hanya melindungi tanah dari erosi, tetapi juga mendukung keanekaragaman hayati.
SDG 17 – Kemitraan untuk Mencapai Tujuan (Partnership for the Goals)
Kegiatan ini merupakan hasil kolaborasi strategis antara Universitas Airlangga, Ikatan Alumni (IKA) UNAIR, pemerintah daerah, dan mitra internasional. Kolaborasi ini mencerminkan pentingnya sinergi lintas sektor dalam mewujudkan tujuan pembangunan yang inklusif dan berkelanjutan.

Perspektif Universitas Airlangga Sebagai salah satu perguruan tinggi terbaik di Indonesia yang mengusung visi Excellence with Morality, Universitas Airlangga terus memperkuat perannya dalam agenda global pembangunan berkelanjutan. Partisipasi dalam Festival Mangrove ke-VIII merupakan wujud dari integrasi nilai-nilai akademik, kemanusiaan, dan keberlanjutan dalam tindakan nyata. UNAIR berkeyakinan bahwa universitas tidak hanya menjadi pusat keilmuan, melainkan juga pusat transformasi sosial dan lingkungan. UNAIR Empowers Communities Through ASIK Competition: Road to SDGs Festival 2025

SDGs NEWS, 17–18 October 2025 — As part of the Road to SDGs Festival 2025, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), organized a two-day workshop and training program to prepare participants for the upcoming Airlangga Sustainable and Impactful Kampung (ASIK) Competition. The event took place at the Jambangan Sub-district Office, Surabaya, and was attended by representatives from six sub-districts (kelurahan) and twelve neighborhood associations (Rukun Warga/RW).

Hands-On Training for Circular Economy and Climate Action

The workshop focused on practical techniques for managing household waste and advancing circular-economy practices at the community level. Participants learned how to transform organic waste into compost and eco-enzymes, convert used cooking oil into detergent soap and aromatic candles, and develop environmentally friendly products with market value. These innovations directly support Indonesia’s Kampung Iklim program, which promotes climate resilience and sustainable community participation. All six participating sub-districts have already achieved Kampung Madya status, reflecting their consistent commitment to environmental action. The training was therefore designed to refine their initiatives and enhance the quality of their proposals in preparation for the ASIK Competition.

UNAIR’s Commitment to Sustainable Community Empowerment

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, Dr. Nurina Fitriani who delivered a welcome address and outlined the goals of the ASIK Competition. In her remarks, she explained that the competition aims to strengthen collaboration between universities and communities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level. She also shared key insights on integrating SDG values—such as environmental care, responsible production, and social inclusion—into community development initiatives. Facilitators from UNAIR’s SDGs experts and partner organizations provided additional guidance on project mapping, proposal development, and impact evaluation, ensuring that local innovations align with sustainable practices.

Turning Kampungs into Sustainable Models

The judging phase of the ASIK Competition will take place from 29 to 31 October 2025, where selected community representatives will present their projects to a panel of judges from UNAIR and partner institutions. The competition is UNAIR’s dedication to advancing SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through inclusive and community-based innovation. By connecting academic knowledge with local empowerment, Universitas Airlangga continues to help transform Surabaya’s kampungs into models of sustainability—where waste becomes value, collaboration inspires innovation, and local action contributes to global progress toward a greener future.

Universitas Airlangga Hosts the 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting: Mangrove Action for Coastal Ecosystem Restoration

SDGs News — Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), proudly hosted the national event “The 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting: Community Service Restoring the Coastal Ecosystem with Mangrove Action" 14/10/2025.

The event brought together student representatives from universities across Indonesia to collaborate on environmental conservation initiatives, focusing on coastal ecosystem restoration through mangrove planting at the Wonorejo Mangrove Area, Surabaya.

Collaborative Learning and Environmental Action

Before the mangrove planting activity, participants joined a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) session on the ecological and global benefits of mangroves, which highlighted their crucial role in mitigating climate change, protecting coastal biodiversity, preventing erosion, and maintaining water quality. The session encouraged students to connect scientific understanding with community-based action, strengthening awareness of how local efforts contribute to planetary sustainability.

The program was attended by Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., PhD, Head of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, along with his leadership team, and Yunita Suci Amalia, Environmental Impact Control Officer from the East Java Provincial Environmental Agency (DLH). Their involvement underscored the strong synergy between universities, government institutions, and youth leaders in advancing sustainability goals.

Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Through this initiative, Universitas Airlangga reaffirmed its strong commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The mangrove restoration effort supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by improving water quality through the natural filtration provided by mangrove roots, which trap sediments and absorb pollutants. It advances SDG 13 (Climate Action) by increasing carbon absorption and strengthening coastal resilience against the impacts of climate change. At the same time, the activity contributes to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by restoring breeding grounds for fish and marine species and revitalizing biodiversity vital to coastal livelihoods, and it supports SDG 15 (Life on Land) through soil conservation and sustainable land management.

Restoring Balance Between People and Nature

More than a symbolic gesture, the collaborative mangrove action reflects UNAIR’s enduring vision of harmony between people and nature. SDGs News - Gresik, East Java, October 25, 2024 Taking a step toward coastal conservation, the UNAIR Student Association of the Faculty of Science and Technology (HIMA FST), in collaboration with the UNAIR SDGs Center, launched the "Mangrove Planting Action 2024" at Kalimireng Mangrove Ecotourism, Sidomukti Village, Gresik. The initiative, aligned with UI GreenMetric’s Green Campus vision, introduced 1,000 mangrove seedlings to restore the coastal ecosystem, crucial for combating erosion, safeguarding biodiversity, and promoting sustainable tourism.

This collaborative planting effort underscores UNAIR's commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supporting the local community's economy. By enhancing mangrove ecotourism, the project not only protects the coastline from erosion but also aims to bolster local livelihoods as Kalimireng Mangrove Ecotourism grows in popularity as a green tourism site in Gresik, East Java.

The choice to plant mangroves reflects their vital role in coastal ecosystems: mangroves stabilize shorelines, protect against storm surges, and support diverse marine life. A single hectare of mangrove forest can sequester carbon at four times the rate of a tropical rainforest, making mangroves an essential tool in climate action. "This project is about more than planting trees; it’s about building a sustainable future. We’re not only investing in environmental health but also in community resilience," said Dr. Nurina, a lecturer from Faculty Science and Technology who praised the partnership between students, faculty, and the local community for coming together to tackle this environmental challenge.

Beyond the physical act of planting, UI Green Metric, HIMA FST, and the SDGs Center also focused on education and outreach, involving local residents and students in workshops on mangrove ecosystem care. The event included practical demonstrations on mangrove maintenance and community discussions on sustainable tourism practices, aiming to foster a long-term commitment to coastal health. The event highlights Universitas Airlangga's dedication to integrating sustainability across all sectors, a commitment evident in its alignment with UI GreenMetric's goals. As a part of the global Green Campus initiative, UNAIR is actively working to promote a sustainable campus culture, reduce environmental impact, and contribute positively to local ecosystems.

SDGs Center UNAIR Berpartisipasi dalam Peluncuran Inisiatif Green Academy

SDGs CENTER UNAIR - Pada tanggal 22 Mei 2024, SDGs Center Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) turut berpartisipasi dalam peluncuran inisiatif Green Academy yang diadakan di Canna Bali, Nusa Dua. Acara ini bertemakan “Building Environmental Planning Capacity in Achieving Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045” dan dihadiri oleh berbagai pemangku kepentingan dari berbagai sektor.

Green Academy merupakan sebuah platform pengembangan kapasitas terintegrasi yang bertujuan untuk menyediakan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam rangka pembangunan hijau. Inisiatif ini diharapkan dapat menjadi pendorong utama dalam mencapai visi Indonesia Emas 2045 yang berkelanjutan.

Deputi Bidang Kemaritiman dan Sumber Daya Alam Kementrian PPN/Bappenas, Vivi Yulaswati, mengungkapkan bahwa terdapat tiga tantangan utama dalam implementasi pembangunan hijau di Indonesia. Pertama, kurangnya kapasitas dan proses pengambilan Keputusan untuk merencanakan serta melaksanakan kebijakan pembagunan hijau. Kedua, adanya permintaan tinggi terhadap investasi ramah lingkungan yang diperlukan dalam transisi menuju pembangunan rendah karbon dan berketahanan iklim. Ketiga, kesenjangan dalam memperoleh teknologi dan inovasi ramah lingkungan yang mendukung penerapan pembangunan hijau yang berkelanjutan di masa depan.

Vivi Yulaswati (Deputi Bidang Kemaritiman dan Sumber Daya Alam Kementerian PPN/Bappenas) menjelaskan tantangan implementasi pembangunan hijau

Ketua SDGs Center UNAIR, Bayu Arie Fianto SE., MBA., Ph.D., hadir sebagai perwakilan SDGs Center UNAIR. Kehadiran beliau menyoroti komitmen UNAIR dalam mendukung upaya pembangunan hijau di Indonesia. “Partisipasi SDGs Center UNAIR dalam peluncuran inisiatif Green Academy adalah langkah strategis untuk memperkuat kapasitas dan keterampilan dalam merencanakan pembangunan yang berkelanjutan,” ujarnya.

Setelah peluncuran Green Academy, fokus utama selanjutnya yaitu permasalahan ketahanan pangan. Hal ini penting mengingat ketahanan pangan merupakan salah satu pilar utama dalam mencapai pembangunan yang berkelanjutan dan inklusif. Maka diperlukan pengembangan berbagai strategi dan solusi untuk memastikan ketersediaan pangan yang cukup, aman, dan bergizi bagi seluruh rakyat Indonesia

Indikator dan target Green Academy untuk 2025-2045

Acara peluncuran ini dihadiri oleh berbagai pihak, termasuk akademisi, pemerintah, dan pelaku industri, yang semuanya berkomitmen untuk bekerja sama dalam mewujudkan visi Indonesia Emas 2045. Dengan dukungan dari berbagai pihak, inisiatif Green Academy diharapkan dapat mempercepat langkah Indonesia menuju masa depan yang lebih hijau dan berkelanjutan, sesuai dengan visi besar Indonesia Emas 2045.

Universitas Airlangga Integrates Local Biodiversity into Green Campus Initiatives

SDGs News - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is leading the way in sustainable campus development by incorporating local biodiversity into its planning and design. Through a combination of policy initiatives, partnerships, and green projects, UNAIR is transforming its campus into a model for environmentally responsible university spaces that support local flora and contribute to climate action.

As part of its commitment, UNAIR has issued Rector’s Decree No. 1050/UN3/2021 on Green Campus Management, establishing standards for building repair and construction to minimize environmental impact. The policy emphasizes reducing land clearing and preserving natural habitats while integrating green spaces into campus architecture. To strengthen its approach, UNAIR collaborated with the Association Nature Diversity, which provided training on Biodiversity Impact Assessment, equipping staff with skills to assess and protect biodiversity during development projects.

Recent projects under this initiative include a vibrant Rooftop Garden on UNAIR’s new lecture building, designed to create a cool, lush environment featuring diverse flowers and plants. This rooftop space not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the campus but also contributes to air quality and temperature regulation, aligning with UNAIR’s sustainable development goals.

Further enriching the campus landscape, UNAIR has developed a Fruit Garden, which includes a variety of native and locally cherished species such as mango, starfruit, water apple, guava, banana, papaya, sapodilla, jackfruit, and chili plants. This green space not only adds biodiversity to the campus but also serves as a living laboratory for students studying sustainable agriculture and environmental sciences.

Through these initiatives, Universitas Airlangga is setting a standard for green campus management in Indonesia. With dedicated policies, innovative projects, and a focus on local biodiversity, UNAIR is creating a campus that embodies environmental stewardship and supports the global goals of climate action and sustainable urban development.

In Kedungpring, Lamongan, UNAIR's community service team has partnered with the Farmer Group Association Tani Abadi to train 20 local farmers in the production of biofertiliser. By equipping farmers with essential tools, including a biofertiliser bioreactor, the team ensures that they have the resources needed to produce organic fertiliser sustainably. This initiative not only addresses local fertiliser needs but also encourages a significant reduction in chemical fertiliser use, a step forward in promoting sustainable agriculture. The program includes ongoing monitoring and evaluation to ensure long-term success and support the transition toward more eco-friendly farming practices.

Meanwhile, in Bolo Village, Gresik, students from UNAIR's Faculty of Pharmacy are working with lime farmers, most of whom are women, to repurpose lime peels into hand sanitiser and micellar water. This innovative approach to waste reduction and resource efficiency not only curbs waste but also creates a new source of income for the farmers. By teaching the local community to transform agricultural byproducts into value-added products, UNAIR is helping to boost local incomes and promote environmentally responsible practices.

Universitas Airlangga Students Lead Ecosystem Restoration Efforts in Banyuwangi

SDGs News — In a powerful commitment to protecting Indonesia’s threatened ecosystems, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has initiated a series of impactful restoration projects aimed at preserving biodiversity in both marine and terrestrial environments. Working through its SDGs Center, UNAIR has mobilized local and international students to restore coral reefs and mangrove forests, protect endangered sea turtles, and promote eco-tourism.

In collaboration with 30 international students from UCSI University and Universiti Malaya, UNAIR students recently volunteered to restore mangrove forests at Pantai Cemara. Together, the team planted 50 Rhizophora mangrove seedlings to support the ecosystem’s recovery, essential for coastal protection and as a habitat for diverse marine life. These efforts are part of UNAIR’s broader strategy to address environmental threats to plant and animal biodiversity in East Java.

This initiative aligns with the Banyuwangi International Cultural Heritage & Community Services program, where UNAIR students also work on mapping and replanting medicinal gardens. These gardens are intended to help local communities by providing access to natural medicines and supporting land restoration. By promoting the use of medicinal plants, UNAIR fosters sustainable health and wellness solutions rooted in local wisdom.

UNAIR launched a sea turtle conservation ecosystem on Santen Island in 2023. This project, centered on creating a sustainable habitat for the endangered sea turtles, has introduced innovative solutions like “Intan Box” incubators, which provide a safe space for turtle eggs. Alongside these efforts, the project includes the release of hatchlings into the sea, the training of conservation cadres, and the use of ecobricks, supporting UNAIR’s educational eco-tourism vision for the island. These initiatives are empowering the Santen Island community, making conservation an integral part of local eco-tourism and community identity.

Universitas Airlangga Advances Conservation Efforts with Mangrove and Brantas River Programs

Surabaya, Indonesia — In a major initiative to support ecosystem conservation, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is leading impactful programs to preserve two critical ecosystems in East Java: the mangrove habitats along the coastlines of Surabaya and Banyuwangi and the vital Brantas River. Both ecosystems are essential for regional biodiversity, water quality, and sustainable land management, aligning with UNAIR’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community responsibility.

In collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, and local communities, UNAIR has launched a mangrove conservation program aimed at protecting Surabaya and Banyuwangi’s coastal ecosystems. These mangrove areas provide a natural habitat for over 140 bird species, including 12 protected species, and serve as a critical barrier against coastal abrasion. By restoring mangrove forests, the initiative supports both environmental protection and sustainable eco-tourism in East Java, empowering communities to take active roles in preserving their natural resources.

Meanwhile, UNAIR has joined forces with the East Java government, five Indonesian universities, and three universities from the Netherlands to tackle the challenges facing the Brantas River, a primary water supply and irrigation source for the region. This ambitious redevelopment project includes the development of digital platforms—websites and applications—for real-time monitoring of water quality. UNAIR’s involvement also extends to organizing water patrols and collaborating with local agencies to manage pollution, combat illegal construction, and ensure the river’s sustainability.

Through these initiatives, Universitas Airlangga is setting a benchmark for collaborative environmental action in Indonesia. With projects aimed at preserving biodiversity, improving water quality, and fostering sustainable eco-tourism, UNAIR’s efforts are making a lasting impact on East Java’s natural landscapes and supporting global goals for sustainable land and water management.
