Universitas Airlangga Hosts the 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting: Mangrove Action for Coastal Ecosystem Restoration

SDGs News — Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), through the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact (Lembaga Pengabdian Masyarakat Berkelanjutan/LPMB), proudly hosted the national event “The 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting: Community Service Restoring the Coastal Ecosystem with Mangrove Action" 14/10/2025.

The event brought together student representatives from universities across Indonesia to collaborate on environmental conservation initiatives, focusing on coastal ecosystem restoration through mangrove planting at the Wonorejo Mangrove Area, Surabaya.

Collaborative Learning and Environmental Action

Before the mangrove planting activity, participants joined a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) session on the ecological and global benefits of mangroves, which highlighted their crucial role in mitigating climate change, protecting coastal biodiversity, preventing erosion, and maintaining water quality. The session encouraged students to connect scientific understanding with community-based action, strengthening awareness of how local efforts contribute to planetary sustainability.

The program was attended by Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., PhD, Head of the Airlangga Institute of Sustainable Community Impact, along with his leadership team, and Yunita Suci Amalia, Environmental Impact Control Officer from the East Java Provincial Environmental Agency (DLH). Their involvement underscored the strong synergy between universities, government institutions, and youth leaders in advancing sustainability goals.

Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Through this initiative, Universitas Airlangga reaffirmed its strong commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The mangrove restoration effort supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by improving water quality through the natural filtration provided by mangrove roots, which trap sediments and absorb pollutants. It advances SDG 13 (Climate Action) by increasing carbon absorption and strengthening coastal resilience against the impacts of climate change. At the same time, the activity contributes to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by restoring breeding grounds for fish and marine species and revitalizing biodiversity vital to coastal livelihoods, and it supports SDG 15 (Life on Land) through soil conservation and sustainable land management.

Restoring Balance Between People and Nature

More than a symbolic gesture, the collaborative mangrove action reflects UNAIR’s enduring vision of harmony between people and nature. It demonstrates the power of youth-led environmental stewardship and community service in safeguarding the planet’s ecosystems—showing that real change begins with collective action, one coastline at a time.

UNAIR Meraih Penghargaan Peringkat ke-9 Dunia THE Impact 2025

Koordinator Tim Ahli SDGs, A. Safril Mubah, mewakili UNAIR menerima penghargaan THE Impact Ranking ke-9 dunia.

Universitas Airlangga meraih prestasi gemilang dengan menduduki peringkat ke-9 dunia THE Impact 2025. Pencapaian itu juga menempatkan UNAIR pada posisi pertama di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara serta ke-2 di Asia dalam dampak perguruan tinggi terhadap Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prestasi ini mencerminkan kontribusi signifikan UNAIR pada 17 poin SDGs. Di antara 17 poin tersebut, UNAIR juga mendapatkan pengakuan dunia atas pencapaian peringkat pertama SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), peringkat ke-3 SDG 1 (No Poverty), peringkat ke-4 SDG 5 (Gender Equality), dan peringkat ke-29 SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

Dalam pernyataan resminya pada 18 Juni 2025, Times Higher Education (THE) memuji UNAIR sebagai institusi paling berkelanjutan dari negara ekonomi berkembang. Pujian itu wajar didapatkan oleh UNAIR mengingat peringkat UNAIR melonjak signifikan dari ke-81 dunia (2024) ke-9 dunia (2025). Atas prestasi tersebut, THE memberikan penghargaan secara langsung kepada UNAIR dalam Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) di Istanbul, Turki, pada 16-19 Juni 2025. A. Safril Mubah, Koordinator Tim Ahli SDGs UNAIR, mewakili UNAIR menerima penghargaan yang diberikan secara langsung oleh Julie Wilkens McMahon, Vice President THE dan Direktur Kawasan Asia Pasifik.

Dalam pertemuan dengan Safril, Julie memandang UNAIR telah menampilkan performa fantastis dalam THE Impact Rankings. “Congratulations to UNAIR for such a wonderful achievement!,” kata Julie. Safril menyambut baik apresiasi tersebut dan mendorong untuk meningkatkan kolaborasi secara berkelanjutan di masa depan. Dia mengungkapkan bahwa UNAIR berhasil meraih peringkat ke-9 dunia berkat kontribusi semua pihak di UNAIR yang saling berkolaborasi secara sinergis untuk memberikan dampak positif signifikan terhadap pencapaian tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan. “Kami mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua sivitas akademika UNAIR yang telah berperan aktif dalam pengajaran, penelitian, dan pengabdian dalam berbagai bidang yang sejalan dengan SDGs. Penghargaan ini merupakan bukti bahwa UNAIR telah menjalankan program yang berdampak luas bagi peningkatan kualitas hidup masyarakat,” ujar Safril.

THE mengumumkan UNAIR sebagai perguruan tinggi peringkat ke-9 dunia THE Impact Ranking 2025 pada Global Sustainbale Development Congress di Istanbul, 16-19 Juni 2025.

Prestasi UNAIR mencapai peringkat ke-9 THE Impact menempatkan institusi pendidikan Indonesia sebagai aktor penting pencapaian tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan pada tingkat global. Keunggulan UNAIR dalam SDG 6 menggambarkan komitmen Indonesia dalam penyediaan air bersih untuk kebutuhan masyarakat dunia. Melalui pencapaian global ini, UNAIR membuktikan peran strategisnya sebagai perguruan tinggi yang berkontribusi besar dalam penyelesaian aneka permasalahan yang dihadapi masyarakat.

SDGs Centre UNAIR - Hansel Alexander, Mahasiswa Farmasi Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dan SDGs Ambassador UNAIR terpilih tahun 2023, memberikan materi secara daring tentang SDG 6 dan SDG 12 dalam acara "Exploring SDG 6 & SDG 12" yang diselenggarakan oleh AIESEC IN UNHAS. Acara ini diikuti oleh 60 peserta yang antusias untuk memperdalam pemahaman mereka tentang tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan (SDGs).

Melalui platform online ZOOM MEETING, Hansel memulai dengan pengenalan umum tentang SDGs, menjelaskan pentingnya tujuan-tujuan ini bagi pembangunan global yang berkelanjutan. Ia kemudian memberikan penjelasan rinci tentang SDG 6, yang berfokus pada akses air bersih dan sanitasi, serta SDG 12 yang menekankan pada konsumsi dan produksi yang bertanggung jawab.

"Ketersediaan air bersih dan sanitasi yang layak masih menjadi tantangan besar, terutama di wilayah-wilayah terpencil. Konsumsi dan produksi yang bertanggung jawab sangat penting untuk menjaga keberlanjutan sumber daya alam kita," jelas Hansel kepada para peserta.

Hansel juga menyoroti isu-isu lokal terkait SDGs 6 dan 12 di Sulawesi Selatan, seperti masih minimnya akses air bersih di beberapa daerah dan masalah pengelolaan limbah. Ia menekankan bahwa isu-isu ini memerlukan perhatian dan tindakan segera, mengingat komplikasi dan urgensi yang ada.

"Peran kita semua sangat penting dalam mengatasi tantangan ini. Setiap langkah kecil yang kita ambil bisa membawa perubahan besar," ujarnya, mengajak peserta untuk aktif berpartisipasi dalam mencapai tujuan-tujuan ini.

Mengakhiri sesi, Hansel memberikan call to action kepada peserta, mendorong mereka untuk mulai bertindak dari hal-hal kecil di lingkungan sekitar mereka demi masa depan yang lebih baik.

UNAIR has equipped over 80% of campus restrooms with automatic, sensor-activated faucets and water-efficient toilets, which minimize water usage by delivering only the necessary amount. This technology helps avoid water waste, enhancing efficiency across campus facilities. These installations reflect UNAIR's alignment with Greenship and LEED standards, which prioritize water efficiency in green building practices. Regular maintenance and monitoring ensure that these systems function at peak performance, further optimizing water conservation.

Rainwater Harvesting and Reuse for Sustainable Landscaping

All major buildings on campus are equipped with rainwater harvesting systems, which capture rainwater for non-potable uses, such as land irrigation. UNAIR Wastewater Recycling and Sustainable Water Management

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is stepping up its commitment to environmental sustainability by implementing a comprehensive wastewater treatment system across its campuses. This initiative is part of the UNAIR's broader effort to promote sustainable water management and reduce its environmental impact.

Wastewater generated from various campus activities – including toilets, sinks, canteens, mosques, and laboratories – is treated through dedicated Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) located at 3 main buildings. On average, 20 cubic meters of wastewater is collected daily, which undergoes a seven-step treatment process to ensure safety and sustainability.

The treatment process includes sedimentation, neutralization with calcium, and biological treatment using specific bacteria, ensuring that the treated water is safe for discharge or reuse. Reclaimed water is reused for toilet flushing and plant irrigation, significantly reducing water consumption across the campuses.

In addition to general wastewater treatment, UNAIR has also implemented systems for recycling water used in specific areas. Since 2021, UNAIR’s Faculty of Pharmacy has also operated its own WWTP to manage wastewater independently. This facility treats liquid waste from laboratories and toilets, ensuring that harmful substances are removed and the water can be safely reused.

Moreover, in 2023, UNAIR began the construction of a communal wastewater treatment facility with a capacity of 40 cubic meters near the rectorate building. This expansion will enhance UNAIR’s ability to handle wastewater efficiently and reduce the negative environmental impact on local ecosystems.

The benefits of UNAIR’s wastewater management efforts go beyond environmental protection. The system also provides opportunities for education and research on water treatment technologies, positioning the university on environmental sustainability. As part of its commitment, UNAIR continuously evaluates and improves its wastewater treatment processes to ensure optimal performance and minimal environmental footprint

These effiecnt, automated systems demonstrate how water-wsie practices can be integrated into daily agricultural processes, empowering farmers to achieve higher yields with reduced water usage. Community-Based Total Sanitation in Tamanbaru Village, Banyuwangi

In partnership with local stakeholders, UNAIR's Faculty of Helath, Medicine, and Natural Sciences have led Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) verification for over 550 families in Tamanbaru Village, Banyuwangi.This initiative addresses comprehensive water safety and sanitation, focusing on clean water management, food safety, and household wastewater. By educating households on water conservation, wastewater handling, and sanitation practices, UNAIR's STBM program improves health and sanitation standards while fostering long-term water stewardship within the community. These sanitation practices support sustainable water management and significantly reduce health risk associated with inadequate sanitation.

Ranwater Harvesting Installation on Gili Iyang Island

Recognizing the need for sustainable water sources on Gili Iyang Island, Madura, UNAIR’s Faculty of Science and Technology constructed a rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of over 2,000 liters. This system provides clean water for essential needs such as bathing, washing, and ablution, reducing the island’s dependence on external water sources. By capturing and filtering rainwater, UNAIR has created a sustainable model for communities facing water scarcity, underscoring its commitment to promoting self-sufficiency and water security.

Throughout the year, UNAIR reused 150,259 cubic meters of water, equivalent to tens of thousands of swimming pools. The systematic tracking of water usage not only reduces overall consumption but also curbs reliance on external water sources, cutting costs, and underscoring UNAIR's commitment to sustainable resource management. The reuse policy is practical model of resource conservation that aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Harnessing Technology for Efficiency

Advanced technologies play a central role in UNAIR's water management strategy. In campus landscapes, automatic control panels monitor and regulate irrigation, delivering water only when needed. These systems significantly improve irrigation efficiency allowing for precision in water usage, a solution particularly crucial for drought-prone seasons. The automatic control panels are located at eight strategic points throughout the UNAIR campus.

Educational Outreach and Research Integration

Beyond operational gains, UNAIR's commitment to sustainable water use has opened doors for educational opportunities, integrating environmental awareness into academic and community outreach programs. Workshops, seminars, and practical demonstrations on water reuse serve to educate the campus and surrounding communities, fostering a culture of sustainability. The policy also encourages student involvement in water conservation projects, making UNAIR a model of how educational institutions can bridge research and practical application to promote environmental stewardship.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has embarked on a landmark partnership to address water security challenges facing one of Indonesia's critical water resources, the Brantas River. In collaboration with five Indonesian universities and global partners form LDE Consortium — including Leiden University, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), and Erasmus University — this initiative, called the Indonesia-Netherland, aims to create a sustainable, multidisciplinary management plan for the Brantas River.

The Brantas River, a crucial source of water for millions in East Java, has faced significant pollution and environmental degradation due to industrial and domestic waste. In show of support, the Governor of East Java endorsed the project's goal to improve the Brantas River's water quality, acknowledging it as a crucial initiative for regional water security.

a. Initial filtration to remove large particles and debris

b. Biological treatment to break down organic matter

c. Chemical treatment to neutralize hazardous substances

d. Final filtration and disinfection to ensure water is safe for reuse

Once treated, the water is recycled for non-potable purposes such as flushing toilets and irrigating plants across the campus. This approach not only conserves water but also ensures that no harmful substances enter natural water systems.

Measuring to Prevent Accidental Pollution

UNAIR goes beyond routine wastewater management by implementing a series of preventive measures to avoid pollution caused by accidents or incidents. UNAIR has installed real-time monitoring sensors across its STP infrastructure, enabling immediate detection of irregularities in water quality or treatment processes.

If there’s unexpected contamination or an accidental spill, an emergency spill containment system is activated. This system swiftly isolates and contains the pollutants, preventing them from entering the main water supply or surrounding environment. Each STP unit is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature, designed to halt operations in case of emergencies to minimize the risk of contamination.

Dedicated HSE Officers and Continous Safety Audits

UNAIR also assigns dedicated Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) officers at each treatment unit to oversee the strict implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for liquid waste management. These officers ensure that wastewater is collected, stored, treated, and disposed of following stringent environmental guidelines.

To maintain high safety standards, UNAIR conducts regular safety audits and testing of its wastewater management systems. These audits help to identify potential risks and areas for improvement, allowing the university to continually upgrade its processes and remain proactive in preventing pollution.
