Universitas Airlangga Implements Measureable Water Reuse for Sustainable Campus Operations

Universitas Airlangga is taking groundbreaking steps in sustainable campus management through its meticulously measured water reuse program. Guided by formalized policy, including Rector's Decree No. 1837/UN3/2018 on Water Recycling and Water Harvesting, UNAIR has implemented a comprehensive approach to track and maximize water reuse, a commitment that is transforming environmental responsibility within higher education.

Throughout the year, UNAIR reused 150,259 cubic meters of water, equivalent to tens of thousands of swimming pools. This reclaimed water— sourced from rainwater harvesting and treated wastewater from campus facilities such as mosques and sewage treatment plants—serves non-potable needs, including irrigation, toilet flushing, and cooling systems. The systematic tracking of water usage not only reduces overall consumption but also curbs reliance on external water sources, cutting costs, and underscoring UNAIR's commitment to sustainable resource management. The reuse policy is practical model of resource conservation that aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Harnessing Technology for Efficiency

Advanced technologies play a central role in UNAIR's water management strategy. In campus landscapes, automatic control panels monitor and regulate irrigation, delivering water only when needed. These systems significantly improve irrigation efficiency allowing for precision in water usage, a solution particularly crucial for drought-prone seasons. The automatic control panels are located at eight strategic points throughout the UNAIR campus.

Educational Outreach and Research Integration

Beyond operational gains, UNAIR's commitment to sustainable water use has opened doors for educational opportunities, integrating environmental awareness into academic and community outreach programs. Workshops, seminars, and practical demonstrations on water reuse serve to educate the campus and surrounding communities, fostering a culture of sustainability. The policy also encourages student involvement in water conservation projects, making UNAIR a model of how educational institutions can bridge research and practical application to promote environmental stewardship.

Universitas Airlangga’s Commitment to Tracking and Supporting Admissions of Underrepresented Goups

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity and equal access by actively tracking the applications and admissions of underrepresented groups. Through dedicated policies and comprehensive data collection, UNAIR is paving the way for diversity in higher education.

Scholarship Tracking and Regional Inclusion

To support students from low-income families, UNAIR monitors admissions of those awarded the KIP-K scholarship. In 2023, 13,161 students received KIP-K scholarships, which fully cover tuition fees and other education-related costs, providing a vital lifeline for students from rural and underdeveloped regions across Indonesia, including Papua and Eastern Indonesia. Additionally, the university welcomed 183 students from disadvantaged areas, including Papua and West Papua, through the ADik scholarship, ensuring that students from all regions have equitable access to higher education.

Advancing Gender Equality

UNAIR’s admissions data for 2023 shows that 7,557 female students were enrolled out of a total of 11,556 new students, underscoring the university’s commitment to gender equality in education. This figure reflects targeted efforts to create a supportive academic environment where women have equal opportunities to succeed and contribute to their communities.
