Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is committed to preserving aquatic biodiversity through a targeted watershed management strategy that adapts to the specific ecological needs of diverse water bodies. By focusing on community engagement and cross-border collaboration, UNAIR addresses both local and international environmental challenges.

In honor of World Rivers Day, UNAIR’s Law students, in partnership with the Surabaya Environmental Agency, local NGOs, and the Rolak River community—an integral part of the Brantas watershed—organized a comprehensive river cleanup. This initiative raised awareness of watershed health and emphasized the importance of protecting local aquatic species in the Brantas watershed, Indonesia’s second-largest river basin.

Research on SDG 14

Building on this commitment, UNAIR’s Ecology Professor presented essential research titled “Ecological Conservation of Biological Resources for Sustainable Development” at a national forum, highlighting Indonesia’s environmental crisis and effective conservation strategies. This research not only addresses ecological challenges within Indonesia but also informs UNAIR’s approach to watershed management by emphasizing the specific conservation needs of local biodiversity.

Kim Kim rivers

Internationally, UNAIR’s efforts extend to Johor, Malaysia, where UNAIR collaborated with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on a community service project aimed at restoring the Kim-Kim River. Using environmentally friendly techniques like microorganism mudballs to mitigate pollution and planting trees along Sungai Melayu’s coast, this project demonstrates UNAIR’s dedication to sustainable watershed management practices that can be adapted across borders.
